Have you ever wondered why mac's don't include...

Why the hell would you need a flashing LED ? I've had my mac for a while now and flashing LED is the stupidest reason why not to use a mac...

As for the 1 mouse button mouse, i use 8 btn logitech mouse and it works great. How many people actually keep the mouse that comes with their dell/hp etc. ?


As for the noise thing, THERE IS NO FVKING WAY YOU CAN ARGUE THAT PCS ARE QUITER THAN MACS. If anyone attempts to do that, hes a complete idiot and should not reproduce. My whole g4 tower isnt nearly as loud as the stock p4 hsf..

because it's nice to know when your hardrive is in use. it's not necessary, kinda of like always knowing the time - it's not necessary to know what time it is at least every 10 minutes but it sure is nice to know it.

though i agree that would be a stupid reason to not use a mac.

Theres a program for OSX that sits i nthe top bar gives you both eth0 and hda (what ever they call it in darwin) access. Also im sure theres a unix command like tool that will do the same (top? df?). Having hardware leds is just stupid and annoying

Lets put up your $2000 mac with a $600 dell dimension and see which one comes out quieter. You probably won't be able to tell the difference..

uhh how much do you wanna bet? My roomates xp2100+ and my own p4 1.6@2.1 sounded like vacuming machines compared to the tower



about the software indicator, i dont use those the HDD and eth0 indicators either, i dont need the LEDs or any other way for that matter. I do keep the ram and cpu usage parts, its kinda handy

I actually really like the LED light flashing on the HD and CD-rom so I can see what's going on, it's a thing of convenience.

My major problem with buying a mac laptop is the one button mouse. I'm not carrying around a mouse to use with my laptop, if you can't put at least 2 butotns on it, and preferably 3 I'll buy something else. It'd be really nice if their cheaper laptops were available with larger screens too. Yeah portability is really nice but the option of a chunkier laptop would for a larger screen would be fine without having to pay like $500 more would be great. As much as I'd love to play with OSX I just don't think they can compete for my limited budget anything at all like dell can.

As for the loudness thing... I've got a dual 1ghz G4 tower at my house... I have an athlon 1800+ with like 4 case fans, a old micron case with a p200 in it with 2 loud case fans, and the mac...

guess what I can still here clicking? yup, the seagate hard drives...

And although iMacs are supposed to be quiet, did you ever notice if you're in a lab of them the hard drives have a really bad whine to them? it's annoying...

oh well

enough ranting. I like osX... it's pretty, but it's kinda like unix structure wise.

Have you ever used a dell before? They only have 1 120mm fan in the back and its only audible if you stick your ear to the case.

Obviously...both of those cpus require at least a 60mm fan for cooling. When I opened a 2001 PowerPC, i found out that it was also running fanless (like the dell).

And of course, the money you save from buying your $1000 uber pc vs. your $3000 uber mac can be used on some foam insulation.

yes, everyone know that Apple is hellbent on aesthetics. I guess it also gives them a better control of what peripherals people buy. And people complain that MS is a control freak.

Though, I really don't know what you'd put in it. I've never seen anyone, on a mac or PC, use a PCMCIA slot for anything but variuos network cards and modems, and the macs have built in ethernet and 56k, and they take a wireless card internally, and the new ones even have built-in bluetooth.

My previous and current system are silent. You can't hear them unless you get right next to them and listen carefully. My uncle's Dell is also dead silent. When he brought it over to have me take a look at something, I turned it on without a monitor attached and couldn't tell it was running. PC's & Mac's are equally quiet. There are loud systems from both types.

I was wondering the same thing about my iBook, then one day while I was tinkering with it, I 'found' the PCMCIA slot under the keyboard. Its pretty much useless for anything but the supplied airport card.

I was under the impression that it was not really a PCMCIA slot, thus the reason you had to use Airport cards and could not use say a random Wireless nic, but than again we were talking about older mac's before they started building the wireless cards in.

I figure they got tossed when the apple design department said "they're ghey". What I do wonder is why macs don't include a normal mouse. Who the heck likes a single mouse button? Especially one smaller than a hockey puck?
