Yep, pretty comparable to that. I can't comprehend why people spend so much money for such litttle jumps in harware. I usually wait to at least 2x mhz jump before I even consider upgrading anything.

Similar timeframe here as well.
P120 -> Tbird 900 -> P4 1.8G

May 96, winter 00-01, and about 10-11 months ago.

The longest thing that stayed in my computer (not counting things like floppys or sound cards - my sblive! is "original") was my Radeon 64VIVO that stayed in my computer almost 2 years (replaced a couple of months ago with a 8500).

Everything else got upgraded in approximately annual increments.
