Not directly, though sometimes indirectly from the changes in company behavior. The music cartels were busted for price-fixing CDs and were forced to stop. I didn't bother to do the paperwork to get the $6(?) settlement check.

Got a $50 check from chase a few weeks ago. Bigger than all the previous class action checks combined.

Could you share some specifics? Was the CAL due to a banking or a CC issue?

It would be better if they just made a lottery of the payout and one or two people who get chosen get all the money. I'd rather take my chances that way than get a check for 3 cents.

My wife signed up one one of those suits against Kmart for making them work their lunch hour and not being paid. We never thought anything about it, and about a year later, she opened the mail and had a check for $4500.00. We were just shocked. We had to pay taxes on it, but that's ok.

I got $1200 or $1300 a couple years back from a CAL against a previous employer. They hadn't paid PTO or vacation time to any of their employees for like a year.

I fot $10,000+ from my employer at the time for denying overtime in violation of CA law. IIRC all of the money went to the class as the lead plaintiffs were attorneys and did it pro bono.

Class action lawsuits are hilarious. It's not even worth sending it in the mail, they should just make them direct deposit. The letter and envelope probably cost more than the check inside is worth. :D

I got $50 back from my first mortgage company after they were caught in a kickback scheme with a PMI company.

I'm not even sure how class actions are legal. Doesn't it essentially boil down to a third party waiving your right to pursue (real) compensation?

Well I suppose if they get the envelopes in bulk and they're like under a cent each and some kind of super deal through the postal service, but still. Sending out millions of <1$ checks in the mail just seems silly to me. They should just direct deposit, or it should just all go to charity by default unless someone actually requests to get it.

And how did you manage to be part of 400 class action lawsuits?

Yes, $100 or so from BoA. Felt vindicated.. it was over an incident that caused me to leave the bank years earlier. At the time I actually didn't know the extent to which it was a shady practice. Bless those lawyers.

I got $50 or so out of that (assuming its the same one) for the overdraft scam they were running. They ripped us off for 3 paychecks in a row totaling $4000 and I got $50 back some 5 years later.

Thanks.

Yeah, I get a settlement check every 6 months or so. I've gotten between .03 cents and as high as $48.

There are law firms that use CAL as the basis for their business. They look for CAL opportunities from different products and make millions, meanwhile the victims get a portion of the winnings divided between a lot of people.

Legal abuse at its finest.

It's only abuse because the law is written wrong. These companies still need to be sued (executed on live television is more like it) but the victims should be better compensated.

Are you giving your account info to Bank of America after they just got penalized for robbing your bank account?

Check plz.

Sorry meant to quote Red Squirrel. Plus then you're just paying some firm to contact and collect bank info from 500,000 people and then contact each bank to make desposits. Might be cheaper to just mail it.

I got a sizable amount from a settled CAL against British Airways for a price fixing scheme from flights I took to London back in the 90s and early 00s. It was money I never expected, around $500 total IIRC

Im sure the lawyers got much more out of it but hey I still got 5 hundo

I've had a three I think. Got $400-500 from an eTrade settlement a few years ago, a new videocard from ATI, and $250 from ATI which was the replacement value of my x850xt.

I think I got one more than this but the last one was for Sam's club. It was like a dollar and change. I laughed when I got that check.
