Have you ever materially benefited from a Class-Action Lawsuit?

I laugh whenever I hear of or get a payout from a CAL. The only party that benefits from CALs are the lawyers who request (and usually get) millions upon millions for their hard work. Yesterday I got yet another letter in the mail (with a check). After my last (huge) check from the latest eBay CAL ($0.13) I was reluctant to waste the time to even open the letter ... but once I did I was surprised to find a check for $78 from a CAL against an insurance company.

Was wondering if anyone else had ever been pleasantly surprised in such a way?

Yes, $100 or so from BoA. Felt vindicated.. it was over an incident that caused me to leave the bank years earlier. At the time I actually didn't know the extent to which it was a shady practice. Bless those lawyers.

I was offered gift cards or some kind of freebie which I never bothered with. I have never received cash although I did receive a credit to my verizon phone bill on one occasion. I don't remember the amount but it wasn't much(possibly 10-20).

Yeah, I get a settlement check every 6 months or so. I've gotten between .03 cents and as high as $48.

There are law firms that use CAL as the basis for their business. They look for CAL opportunities from different products and make millions, meanwhile the victims get a portion of the winnings divided between a lot of people.

Legal abuse at its finest.

Just got a $50 check in the mail from one. Considering I lost out on over $500 in fees and interest due to having to transfer my balance elsewhere because of the bank's shady practice I don't really feel vindicated.

a couple bucks.

I can't even remember the specifics, it was something about CD's or CDR's in the late 90's/early 00's.

Really? Care to share details? I'd actually be curious on the backstory to that lawsuit.

Anyway it was a $40 fee and a $100 settlement so I figured it was fair considering I did nothing but fill out some form online. Hard to argue I deserved a lot more than that, regardless of what the lawyers got.

Mine was mailed to me a while ago.

~$100 from the Deathstar HDD debacle back in the day. ~$300 from a mortgage refi many moons ago.

I joined that DeBeers diamond one back in '07 or '08. No $$ yet.

Yes. Received some money from a handful of companies due to shady practices/sale policies.

I bought an Infiniti several years back where for the 2005 model they had printed that it had a limited slip differential if you got this wheel package. It didn't have it since it had been removed that year. Some people filed a class action but I just took the $1000 they offered so I suppose I benefitted from the other people filing. Worked out that I got the wheel package for free

Well, that post was a bit sarcastic.

My google-fu is failing me but there was a tobacco lawyer that bought a pro team (Fl?) with his "winnings." Forbes has a nice list here. 2001
Tobacco Lawyers—Cigarette money alone put these ten lawyers on the top-earning list—and it's likely to keep them there for the next 25 years. They're using the booty to sue HMOs, chemical companies, Firestone, and even to run for office.
Ron Motley.
Motley and his law firm, Ness, Motley, Loadholt, Richardson & Poole, will collect an estimated $2 billion through tobacco litigation over 25 years.

I got 3 cents from Dicover card miscalculating interest back in like 1998. I guess I was wrongfully overcharged by 5 cents. The lawyers kept 2, I got 3. I doubt there was anyone who got a sizable return other than the lawyers.

They sent me a check with a letter, lol. Said if I didn't cash it in 90 days the money would go to charity.
