Yup, there is a total difference. It's an aquired taste. I don't really like it that much, to thick and sweet. My sister was actually on vermont and asked for fake syrup, and they just glared at her...

I liked the "fake" stuff just fine until I had real maple syrup, and now that's all I'll buy. If you think it's too thick and sweet, try looking for real maple syrup labeled "light amber".

Real maple syrup is excellent as sweetener for oatmeal (1/3 cup quick 1 minute oats, handfull of curmbled walnuts, milk & water, microwave 1:45 - 2 min) as well as the traditional pancakes and waffles.

I'm a massive fan of maple syrup (as opposed to 'Maple Flavoured Syrup' as the other stuff is labelled in the UK) although it's a little pricey over here...

We call the fake stuff "pole syrup"... (and it tastes like crap compared to real syrup)

I've lived in New England all my life, and that's all I have. When I lived in Vermont, one of our neighbors made his own, and he gave us a bunch. Good stuff.
