A friend of mine has mentioned taking me to a shooting range and showing me how to fire a gun. I have never even held one.

I've never fired one, either. I held my dad's 9mm once or twice, but that's it.

I'm actually going to a shooting range this weekend. I want to become comfortable and proficient with firearms, as I'm considering a career in LE down the road.

I think its good to know how to handle a gun even if you don't have one. I have been raised around guns all my life with hunting so I've never had a problem with them. Just have to realize how easy a fatal accident can happen when using one.

Wait, you live in Texas but you've never fired a gun?

I thought that was a requirement before they let you in.

Yep. Shotgun and a .22 It's hard to grow up in VT without shooting a gun.

It's a requirement before they let you out.

Used to go to the range with my pops every now and then when I was in HS.

Kinda hard to own a weapon on campus when I can get expelled for it due to the rules around here.

I've shot many guns many times... but for some reason I always feel like a p*ssy behind the barrel.

Can you rent guns and buy ammo at most target ranges, or so you have to bring you own? I haven't fired a gun since I was a wee tyke, but I would kinda like to shoot of a few rounds once in a while.

A lot of ranges rent guns provided you buy the ammo from them.

Depends on the range. At the very least, a decent amount of ranges will allow you to rent weapons and purchase ammo. It helps a ton when you're in the market for a firearm. My dad would always go down to the range and try out their weapons or his friends weapons (helps when they're all cops, they have quite the collection).

I still maintain that skeet shooting is completely fake, using sound-triggered exploding clay pigeons. :D

I went through like a month's worth of lawn-mowing money on shells one afternoon when I was 14 or so, and never hit a damned one. All my friends were hitting 70% or better. I can hit stationary targets just fine, but moving airborne targets have always alluded me.

Yes. I own 2 handguns (a .40 and a .380) and multiple shot guns and rifles (.22's, 30-30's, 12ga's, 20ga's, 410). As someone mentioned above, even if you don't own a gun, you should know how to use them, and respect them. The first rule of shooting for you n00bs is to treat every gun as if it were loaded. Unlike most things in life, accidents with firearms, are most times deadly.

I'd advise you to go with someone you know who has better experience, or take a hand gun safety class @ the range, before taking back up shooting. I found that when I got back into it a few years ago, many things I had learned about shooting as a child had left me. It's always better to be safe, than sorry.
