L4D2 is notoriously bad for trolls. It got to the point that when I wanted to start a multiplayer game I would make the server private so only friends could join me.

See I don't get this. All this says to me is you have a sad lonely life and making others miserable is the only way you can feel good about yourself. I get the "taking it too serious" view, but different things are important to different people. Just because you think "it's a game, it's not serious" doesn't mean it's not. I have no issues screwing with people I know, but random strangers? Just never made sense.

people playing those games take them more serious because there is a mandatory time sink involved. Once you've started the game you are there for the duration. If you leave, bad things happen, etc. It's not like you can just pop out and start a new game. This is why people get so frustrated with trolls.

That is why its so funny, playing a game with a time sink is dumb. Its also funny because i'm not the sad one, its the ones who threaten to hack me or murder me that makes it just as entertaining.

You said that when you have a bad day, you go home and take it out on strangers on the internet.

Think about that for a minute.

You don't see how pathetic that is?

No. I don't take anything out on strangers on the internet, I don't play the game like they want so they get upset. I think they have a problem.

I once got killed and all my stuff taken in TOWN in Diablo 1. I was furious, and never played Diablo online or multiplayer ever again. Played D2 and D3 only solo.

I've ran into them on almost every online game I've ever played. The games where it has occurred the most is Counter-Strike and World of Warcraft and of course all the Call of Duty games.

The worst I've seen is in any MOBA game and in BF games. It's annoying as hell when there are like 8 people just fucking shit up in your base in BF3 and the game is close. There always seems to be some dbag who jumps in a tank and starts blowing up vehicles when they spawn or something like that.

Lineage 2 was the best MMO to troll in. Because there were consequences if you sucked and it was fair. I mean anyone could kill anyone, my clan just started shiit with just about every person on the server. Most hated clan, so it made it extremely fun to run around and PVP everyone.

MMOs are too main stream now though, instances are the stupidest thing an MMO can have.

I used to do that in PSO. You couldn't attack mobs in the lobbies, so if one spawns even the weakest mob would kill you. And you dropped everything you were carrying. It was pretty funny.

If it's part of the game design I really have no problem with it, my issue was that the guy hacked the game so that he could attack in town. I wasn't even interested in PVP whatsoever, I was just going through the game collecting stuff.

If PVP is part of the game and the other person can fight back it's fine. It's kind of douchebag behavior if you're attacking someone who is just trying to mind their own business and play the game, but whatever.

With Diablo 1, going to town disabled your ability to attack, it was strictly for going to the market or talking to the NPCs (or trading with other players if you wanted). The guy hacked the game to insta-kill me in town, and taking everything I had built up over something like 100 hours of playing it. I had never attacked anyone PVP in the game ever, I didn't even really talk to people. The guy was just an ahole. If I met a troll like that in real life, I would actually break his jaw at the very least. I don't fly off the handle very easily these days, but some things definitely send me over the edge.

No, it was because of a hack. Monsters were not supposed to spawn in lobbies.

That's a game glitch so ya that's a little different. That's not really being "Trolled" that's just someone cheating.

My problem with MMOs now a day is it caters to the casual market so much. Pretty much with every game actually. The goal is to get as many players as possible, even if it means dumbing down the game to all hell.

Really just my problem with a lot of products though. Television, Gaming, Movies, Music, pretty much all media/entertainment is going down in quality at an alarming rate. All being produced to sell to the lowest common denominator.

Ah, nm then. Hackers out to ruin people's fun time should DIAF. At least with motorists who really piss me off I can kick their teeth in, it's a little more trouble with online gaming. I can't help but feel a little sorry for someone whose idea of fun is to try to intentionally cause trouble for someone else, their life must pretty much suck to be down to that level. It's the same kind of mouth-breathing doucebag mentality that enables bullies, racists, rapists, etc. None of which I'd even think twice about curb checking them or clubbing them in the jaw with a tire iron.

I'm pretty resistant to trolling, but I do like to troll a bit myself.

Back in the WoW raiding days we had an addon that let us draw on the ground and publish to other members of the group. I of course drew penises EVERYWHERE but could only see them myself unless I was the party leader.

Well during a boss fight I was called upon to tank and given leadership. My incredible art was published to the group and we all died spectacular deaths amid a chorus of laughter.

Never really got trolled, but my brother and I did some trolling our selves once.

I introduced my brother to a popular european WOW private server. He isn't much of a fan of anything that relates to RPGs, however it was different in WOW. We played alliance. I was a rogue and he was a druid. We rushed to max level, did some arenas for pvp gear and troll the holy hell out of the pvp-world.

We would go to noob areas and pick on a couple people. one hit kills. Lame? Yeah, but it was a pvp server and we were fishing for guild wars. We would kill a lowbie and they would create another alliance character just to PM us and insult us in broken ass English. Then, they would call for help and a eventually get a decent sized pvp guild/pug war. Other times, we would sneak into Orgrimmar and kill off the flight master, bankers, trainers and auctioneers. Best times were waiting just outside of Orgrimmar in stealth, waiting for people who were dueling to reach low health, pop up and kill them and go back into stealth. It was funny to see the reaction of everyone. Throwing out AOEs at random. We would appear in the distance and /wave they would give chase immediately and lure they into an ambush of other guildies, thus starting another guild war.

Good times.

I'm convinced that a good 30-40% of the console community takes part in trolling to some extent. It's rare that I see true trolling in PC multiplayer, though. Players cheat instead.
