I used to love Quake 3 matches where someone would try being a d-bag and everyone would gang up on him and ignore each other for a while. We would try to see who could find and kill him the most times. When they got pissed and left we had our real match.

I'd rather avoid games with built-in voice chat for exactly this reason. Between awful sounding microphones turned up way too loud and stupid kids spouting offensive non-sense in prepubescent high pitched tones, I'd much rather do just about anything else than sit there at the computer.

At least when the BS is limited to character emotes and chat, the overwhelming stupidity of it at least doesn't seem to hit home quite as hard, and I can pretty well ignore it and manage to have some fun. But permitting random internet dumb asses to assail my senses on two fronts is a recipe for a gaming experience which doesn't at all justify itself.

When i'm having a bad day, i fire up dota 2 and run around in circles to drive everyone insane. Its puts a huge smile on my face knowing how serious people take this game and how I ruin it for them.

Nah, I'm usually careful about who I deal with online. When I did BF3 I got to know a couple people and we always tried to group up to avoid the trouble makers and just do what we had to do.

I know they're out there, but I don't play a whole ton of online games with random people.

There is no built in voice chat in BF3 which is probably the main reason trolling isn´t more common, people still manage to piss me off when they join servers with FF enabled and start shooting their teamates.

It is people who think this stuff is funny that ruin the industry. It is no wonder xbl has the reputation of being full of 12 year olds.

A little blame has to lay with the industry too. Gaming in general is full of teens and 20somthing males, adding anonymous voice chat and expecting people to behave was pretty dense.

See I don't get this. All this says to me is you have a sad lonely life and making others miserable is the only way you can feel good about yourself. I get the "taking it too serious" view, but different things are important to different people. Just because you think "it's a game, it's not serious" doesn't mean it's not. I have no issues screwing with people I know, but random strangers? Just never made sense.

people playing those games take them more serious because there is a mandatory time sink involved. Once you've started the game you are there for the duration. If you leave, bad things happen, etc. It's not like you can just pop out and start a new game. This is why people get so frustrated with trolls.

The definition of "trolling" has changed so much over the years. It used to have an actual specific meaning, nowadays it pretty much means "doing something I personally dislike".

Given the old original definition of trolling, they are extremely rare in online games. I don't see them very often if ever, depending on the game.

Given the more common general definition of "trolling", someone who chooses to play a role I wanted to play or chooses to use a non-standard strategy is labeled as a troll, even if his actions ultimately result in his team winning? Yes, I see "trolls" like that all the time, but I don't' see it as particularly problematic.

Same, I may have a bit of a troll streak of my own.

On the other hand Ive been blocked in a corner by asshats like that and it pissed me off too. Once I get out I proceed to try and make their life hell by letting my inner troll loose.....TROLLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!! (Another great reason to play hardcore...just teamkill the idiot!) :D

I dont really mind the trash talk. Really annoying chatterers get muted, but If someone starts typing crap in chat, I sometimes will try to get under their skin to get them to type something that will get them kicked.

I mean, I'll run into idiots or jerks, but I'm pretty sure most of the time they aren't trolling.

Someone who feeds and dies a lot is usually just a bad player, not a troll.

Someone who rages at you and harasses in chat or voice is just a jerk, not a troll.

Someone who goes off alone and tries to side push a lane but gets ganked and killed isn't trolling, even if the rest of the team is asking him to stay with the team.

This-

Is actual trolling, and I found it kinda hilarious as a 3rd person viewer, but I can't honestly say I see anything like that when I play, it must be fairly rare, or maybe you only see it at the lowest elo levels.

Yea, I think LoL is the worst for me. I mean..every game has it's share of trolls, but pretty much 9 of 10 games has at least one in LoL. They have "things" in place to counter it, however they aren't very effective, and it doesn't take much trying to manipulate the other players into using against the wrong people.

I had a guy troll me on LoL once. We were both working the bottom lane and he kept getting himself killed (early in the game). Blamed me for it, even though he was rushing in head-long. Apparently he knew another player on his team and kept asking that guy to report me  We finished the game, I had a much better KDA ratio than him, coincidently, and I ended up reporting him. Don't think anything happened and I pretty much quit playing LoL after that.

I also had a guy just the other day bitch at me and a couple other guys on TF2. Complaining that we weren't team players. Funny thing was, I wasn't on his team! lol. I told him so and he apologized. I guess some guys get so worked up they forget who they're mad at and take it out on everyone.

This is true. You're supposed to be 17 to play mature rated games like shooters, but it never said mature.

I'd say the worst for me is when you're in a racing game getting an awesome lap time and people are all like "man you're gonna break the record" and some joker thinks it's funny to drive backwards and attempt to hit you. THAT is just...I dunno the right words.

I've definitely ran into the L4D trolls, but I usually had a full group with friends so it was still a rare occurrence. Always found servers with good rules and admins for Battlefield games. That's really the extent of my online gaming besides WoW in terms of trollable games. Never cared much to try and mess around with people in those games, felt like I was wasting my own time.

Done plenty of trolling in WoW though. Not to screw with battleground matches or screw random dungeons or raids, but definitely trolled trade chat when I had spare time waiting on something to start. One of my favorites was when the lowbies in the hubs begged for money I would open a trade window with them, toss in a bunch of gold, then sit there and tell them that I clicked trade but I'm lagging. Had people wait as much as 15 min before finally walking away. Also liked to get people riled up with item sales through chat. Its best when you use an alt that is seemingly unconnected to all of your friends lurking in the same chat channel. Used Midwayman's sig a few times in battlegrounds to get people to drop (alt+f4); usually others would push it with you, but there was always one guy trying to be good who would point it out if you did it openly.

I'm generally silent though when I game online, and since I had enough of dota back in wc3 I'm completely disconnected from the communities of LoL and other dota iterations.

That's not trolling. Some good WOW trolls I've done in the past:

Finding someone happily questing along from the opposite faction and purposely running into their AOE attacks when fighting NPCs so they are instantly flagged PVP...then killing them. Usually that's good for several kills before they give up questing in that area. I usually did that when someone from the opposite faction was taking my quest mobs or I was bored.

Or even better....use the above trick to flag them (or on PVP server you don't even have to worry about flagging PVP)....attack them while they are fighting an NPC but DON'T kill them...leave a sliver of life and use a slowing/immobilization ability so the NPC finishes them off while you watch. They then suffer durability damage / repair costs...sprinkle in some emotes like /laugh /mourn /dance after they die for more lols.

Tons of other stuff....trolling was pretty fun in WOW:)

I never voice chat with anyone I wouldn't trust to stay in my house alone for any period of time. Text trolling doesn't occur that much but when it does its easily ignored.

I dislike most online games because moderation of the online game is terrible. Dota 2 and LoL don't have active communities against trolling, incompetent players, etc. In Dota 1, you could be banned from a league for simply not being skilled enough to play there. Dota 1 had the best leagues and the best methods of being able to police them, (Invite only, Banlists, etc.) Now that the genre is so mainstream, it's not even worth playing.

The reason I don't find multiplayer fun though isn't trolling, it's the lack of intelligence I find online. I just fired up Halo 4 again, and it was so pathetic and the level of competition so low I just quit. When the other people who you play with and against are that stupid, it's not fun. IMO, online gaming is full of these types of people who just aren't good, that it's not worthwhile to play much anymore. I picked up a lot of single player games to play. Only play LoL to kill time, don't even find the game that interesting.

When i'm having a bad day, i fire up dota 2 and run around in circles to drive everyone insane. Its puts a huge smile on my face knowing how serious people take this game and how I ruin it for them.

Knowing that people like you exist in which when you have a bad day, you go on the internet and "run in circles" for an hour, just makes me happy. Normally, when I have a bad day, I go out with friends, get with some chicks, have a good time. It's good to know that life could be worse.
