Back in the early 90's, I was living out on the Eastside of Portland, and cars were getting broken into constantly.... Mine was broken into once, and another time I caught 2 kids stealing of all things my taillights out of my Toyota truck...
Anyway, one night I was awoken by a noise while I was going to sleep, looked out the window and saw someone looking into the window of my truck, and then kept walking... I saw them break into a neighbors car and went running out the door.... They ran off, cops showed up, not much to do but file a report.... About 2:30 or 3:00 in the morning I am woken up again, I am like 'WTF is this, again...?!?!?'
I look out and see a guy standing outside another neighbors Blazer, and several guys inside going through the whole thing and throwing stuff out the window to the guy outside.... I call 911 and tell them whats going on.... this goes on for another couple of minutes.... All of a sudden they bolt... I had my .45 and dropped the phone and went hell bent chasing after them.... They weren't running all that fast and I quickly caught up with the last guy... He turned around and saw me right behind him and the .45 at the same time and nearly sh!t his pants!!! He stopped like he had velcro on his feet, so fast I nearly ran into him....
He has a bag and hooded sweatshirt, I am drawn down on him with the .45, and he is nearly crying and yelling he didn't do anything... I have him drop the bag, drop to his knees and lock his fingers behind his head.... If your familiar with East Portland, it was right in the middle of 111th and NE Weidler, middle of the night...
Anyway, about the time all this is happening, some guy comes walking down the street from whatI thought was the 7-Eleven, and eyeballs the situation and asks me if I am a cop... I just tell him to keep walking.... which he does... The one mistake I made was I lost sight of him for just a second or two as he walked behind me as I kept my eye on the perp.... I will explain that in a second...
A minute or two after this, two cop cars pull up, I set the handgun on the ground and put my hands up in the air so as not to present myself as threat, and explain the whole situation to them... One of the cops nearly high fives me.... heh....
I later found out the guy who was walking down the street was part of the group, using a scanner he picked up the call going out about a car prowl, and told them to run over a two way radio.... Had he been violent and had a firearm, he could have shot me in the back during that split second I lost sight of him, a mistake I will never make should the situation ever arise again... but everything went pretty well aside from that little error....
The end...
