You know what I find interesting is how people tend to segregate themselves. I don't know how many military folks are here, but that is where I have seen it the most.

I spent 6 yeards in the Navy. You would think people would be integrated across the board, due to the fact that military jobs are assigned based on a person's skills. Anyway, whenever I went into the mess hall or mess decks, you could see all the blacks sitting on one side, all the whites on the other... the other minorities (asian and hispanic) would flood the corners of the room.

We had a black electronics tech in my work center. He used to eat lunch with us on a regular basis. Our work center was 4 whites, 1 hispanic and myself (mix Flip-Am). After about 3 months of pressure from "the black group", he started eating with them. They use to always whisper or yell comments to him when he walked by them to sit with us.

"You too good for us?"
"Leave the crackers alone."
"Run along Mister Tom."

We finally had to tell him to go sit over there if he wanted. I guess he was trying to be loyal to the work center or something... but finally gave in to the peer/racial pressure.

The only thing remotely racist mentioned around me that I can remember recently was at a
comedy club. The "comedian" (and I use that term loosely because he was VERY bad) looked straight at me and said, "No offense", and then preceded to tell a stupid joke about "Crotch Rockets".

I'm half Vietnamese and my father is from Aruba. Most people think I am Hawaiian. Honestly I can't really recall too many racist incidents in my past. I suppose I have been very lucky that the people that I associate with are not that close-minded.

EDIT -
Oh and there was one incident that happened a long time ago that sticks in my mind because it is a personal joke. I've been going to a local Houlihan's for about ten years now (going there tonight actually, too) and one time I looked at the bill and the waitress had scrawled in the message, "CHINESE COMBO" at the bottom. Houlihan's didn't serve anything Chinese at the time (they have egg rolls and some stir fry stuff on the menu now), so she had to have been commenting on my appearance. I'm not Chinese, dip$hit!!

I think a lot of that has to do with the unit's cohesion. Specialized combat units tend to be more geared towards inclusion and integration due to the fact that each member is an integral part of a puzzle. Also, in my experience, it also depended on whether your were in CONUS or OCONUS. In CONUS, you were definitely more inclined to see separation amongst the races. OCONUS, however, the overarching theme of being "American" took over and people tended to hang together regardless. It never mattered what someone looked like OCONUS, IMO.

Hopefully one of these days we will decide to start moving forward again, there's no reason to just accept the faults of the world as something that can't be changed.

Fvck that! Vote Bush!

There are always "mavericks". If you look outside, most people stay with their own kind. The excuse they give is that there is more to "relate" too...

Interesting topic. Sorry to hear about the grandma issue, but as other's have said, that is a dying generation of thought. I wish you and your girlfriend the best.

I'm interested in knowing what brought you and your GF together. Were to two of you schoolmates/co-workers or the like? What drew you to her?

I met her in the fall of '98. Her brother was my roommate in college. We were always on friendly terms, but we normally just saw each other whenever her and her parents came to visit him. I also so her on several other occasions (her grandfather's birthday party...where I first met the "evil" grandmother;)) at their house in Charlotte. But still, nothing more than friends. I had always made a point to talk to her and ask her how she was doing b/c she [was] very shy and I'm just like that...I talk to anyone.

A year went by before and I met her at a mutual friend's birthday party. As usual, she was very shy around the people she didn't know so I made it a point to make her feel comfortable and kept her company all night and gave her a big hug when she left (again, I'm just thinking as a friend here). We exchanged screennames and phone numbers. I IM'd her the very next day:p

We kept in contact over the next few months over phone and IM. I met with her and her best friend friend a couple of times to go out and have some fun. All three of us went out on numerous occassions to movies and they took me clubbin' (haha, me...clubbin'..haha:D). Again, just friends...

Until I came down for her birthday last year. I came to the door of her parents house and she opened the door and I was just like "HOLY MOTHER OF GAWD SHE IS BEAUTIFUL!" I had never really thought about her in that way before, but she was SMOKIN'!!!! I came in and we talked for about an hour as we waited for her best friend to meet us. THAT is where the feelings REALLY started for me...that one conversation (and it also helped that she looked delicious;)).

A few more months went by with us IM'ing and talking and going out (the three of us). That was until this summer when her best friend hinted to me that Elizabeth was VERY interested in me and I told her that I was VERY interested in Elizabeth. After a few more phone calls, I met at her house for a little night of reckoning. We had some alcohol and watched some TV (strangely enough, EVERY show we watched on TV had something to do with sex). We told each other how we felt and it was a BIG relief for both of us to finally get it off our chests:)

From that moment forward, we've been inseperable. The hardest thing for me to do was telling her brother (my best friend) that I was going out with his sister. I was afraid he was gonna kill me (I made a thread about it a while back) but he was cool. Her parents already knew me and my parents and they adore me so that was an easy one.

Anyway, sorry for the long soap opera, but I just get all giddy when I talk about her:)

I'm happy for you. You sound like you are in love. Do I see one of
these in your future?

Have you been personally affected by racism recently??

Yes, I have, but not directly aimed at me.

It is, for all practical purposes, impossible to fire my co-worker, because he is an Indian male working for a government entity. He lies on his timesheet, doesnt know how to install a PCI card (yet he works as a "student technician" in the networking department), does maybe 15 minutes of work for every hour that he is supposed to be working (and is present, I'm not talking about the hours that he lies about). Normally this would be merely annoying, but I keep getting put together with him on projects, because I have the reputation for being the guy who actually does work, even when out of sight of the boss. So the hope is the some of my work ethic will rub off on my co-worker. Yet, the deadlines for stuff are set as if there are two workers on the project, and unless I am physically standing within 5 feet of my coworker, he will goof off the majority of the time... and I'm responsible for getting stuff done on time. When we are working somewhere besides the office, he'll leave the area we are working in, telling me as he leaves that he has to take a leak. No big deal, except no one will see him for the rest of the day. So, I'm consistently getting f***ed because, in practice, we do not have color-blind hiring and dismissal policies.

Yes, i'm currently being discrminated. I'm a 21y/o white American male and there is this job I want and am higher qualified for, but I can't get the job b/c the business is only hiring minorities and women to meet minority demands.

Anyways I'm not racist, I have plenty of white, black, mexican, female, and even a polish friend. I do not have a inferiority or superoirity complex, I'm just seriously annoyed that a person cosidered to be a moniority, with no education and no expierence can get this job but I can't.

my mother in law just lost her job with the county after 10 years because she is the wrong color

the county's demographics have flipped, so now most of the county commissioners are the opposite color they used to be when she started working this job

they replaced her with a lady that worked for her, with less experience, but is the "right" color

my mother in law is consulting an attorney to see if she has a case against the county

America is a nation of racists, and it always has been, because it was founded by racists who came from a racist country in Europe, whose people came from the Romans, and we all know who they were. The lack of sunlight must have had negative physical affects.

I have been victimized by ethnic intimidation by a person that I don't even know for the last two years. I have reported him to the police, but they refuse to do anything. I have considered going after this guy with legal or illegal means, but I know that I would come out the loser.

Oh, by the way, he is black, and I am white.
