Now you're trying to dictate whether or not I can have cake and pie. That, sir, makes you a terruhrish.

Can't we have both?

Was there TSA before 9/11? I don't remember.

Nope. I once carried a bag through airport security at San Diego International Airport with a .45 clip with ammo in it. They asked if they could look in my bag and I was horrified when they pulled that out. I explained that I use that bag to go shooting and didn't realize that the clip was in there. His response was, "Well, you can't take it on the airplane with you." I had my wife with me so she picked it up on her way out.

Today I would be hauled into an interrogation room and probably be on a no fly list...

I don't know, but have the sneaky suspicion it's also probably a felony now too.

This country is worse now than the Soviets and the KGB ever were. Technology has allowed the US to absolutely surpass the Soviets in every way.

In specific examples he's absolutely correct. Obviously he's not correct when you weigh everything.

True enough, I was referring to the spying and monitoring of its citizens, not the wholesale slaughter of some 40ish million people.

Yeah, people wonder why the world is an increasingly shitty place when stupidity keeps getting rewarded.

Anybody can just throw a grenade into a crowded train/bus/restaurant/whatever and many will die. Let's just ban crowded places.

Finally an opinion with some common sense.

I don't know if they are winning, but I think the ones we are supporting in Syria just hacked off a catholic priest's head on camera...

The USA has:
1. Statewide constant surveillance of all US Citizens, indeed, pretty much the entire world, with no court supervision and (until recently) no public knowledge.
2. The Police Force is starting to resemble an organized crime unit. Officers break into the wrong houses all the time, shooting innocent people dead, and get a slap on the wrist. Citizens record officers breaking the law, and are either intimidated or charged with a felony.
3. Laws that will affect US Citizens (the Trans Pacific Partnership) are negotiated behind closed doors by the powers that be, at the behest of the corporate powers.

When I think of the States, I used to think of freedom, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, the American Dream. I think it has become its own worst nightmare - a surveillance police state run for and by the rich and powerful elite.

So yes, the terrorists have won by forcing the States to become its own worst nightmare.

of course terrorists have won - denial is far easier than accomplishment, and our own state denies its citizens the liberty we once had. in order to protect us from terrorists (highly suspect success and motives there), we have given them exactly what they wanted and could not have done themselves.

We're spending eleventy billion pounds every year on anti-terrorist measures due to people being utterly terrified of the 0.00000000000000001% chance that they'll be affected by some kind of terrorist activity.

Yeah, they've won.

I don't see why Kerry is to blame here. Sure he doesn't work magic with his words like Obama. But the success of Bush's smear campaign to label Kerry as a flip flopper I think is a sad reflection of America's arrogance and pride.
It takes a level of humility to come out to admit you were wrong and change your view. It's not like Kerry changed his views to shamelessly pander in desperate attempts to gain support, *cough* Romney *cough*.

But it just shocks me to see him often referred as the greater of the two evils when compared to Bush, as if changing your views is somehow worse than plugging your ears and parroting terrists when no WMDs/links to al Qaeda were found.

John Kerry was meh. I think the real problem was Edwards -- everyone know he smelt fishy and there was a gut feeling that guy was dirty.

When you compare the combined ticket of Kerry-Edwards with today's information vs Bush-Cheney (keeping in mind Iraq was invaded before election) then it is obvious why Bush was picked.

This thread is too late.

The terrorists won a long time ago, so let us all enjoy our beloved freedom for the short time it will last yet.

Terrorists cannot lose, because a war on terrorism, much like a war on drugs, is impossible.

It's very much possible but we wouldn't have the stomach or desire to do what it takes to end it. If we ever win one of those wars, they all those that have been fighting would be out of a job, good incentive to not win.
