on my truck i have all season/ terrain tires, and while i generally have little problem in light snow, on ice they are pretty much necessary to me. gives you traction, no sliding. here in az there isnt really a huge need for them a lot, but i have needed them up by snowbowl a few times on those side roads that arent plowed regularly like the highways.
I see.. but all seasons really suck in serious snow too. I've slipped once and that was on black ice. Ic ouldn't help it. Stop sign. I tried to stop. SLOWLY too. I just slid through the street. Once at night. The next morning I tried to roll up to the stop sign. I slid right through again.
Anyway, I use Michelin HydroEdges which are probably the best set of all seasons you can pick up. NEVEr a problem in light snow or on the highway in my numerous trips to the Sierras. I can't really tell if chains help since we have to put them on all the time anyway and it's not like I can run a chains on/off test.
but tires to me are the most important. i had a friend leave an Audi A3 w/ Quattro in the snow because they got stuck and wait till they plowed the roads. Summer tires suck.
