That's the way I always did it. Down-shifted to ease wear on the brakes and idle in neutral to spare the clutch.

I used to think that way, too, but what's cheaper to replace: brake pads or a clutch (regarding downshifting)? I don't down-shift anymore. :)

You oughta get 100k+ miles out of your clutch either way, so it's a non-issue for me. Besides, if you revmatch when you downshift, your clutch wear is so near zero it makes little difference. And you SHOULD revmatch when you downshift.
why not revmatch when upshift too?

It's typically fairly close without trying - engine RPM drops when the clutch is disengaged. You shift into the next gear, release the clutch pedal -- RPM has dropped a bit..typically right around where it needs to be. Unless you shift really slowly, anyway.

I've never been in a situation where I had to accelerate quickly to avoid an accident. I take it out of gear and coast in neutral.

Pressing clutch=use.

When at a complete stop it's better for wear and tear to only use the break while the trasnmission is in neutral.
Bullsh*t. With the clutch pedal fully depressed the clutch is backed away from the flywheel and isn't even touching, there is zero wear on the clutch. There is infinitesimal wear on the throw-out bearing but that's what the bloody throw-out bearing is designed for. I get 150,000+ miles out of my clutches and I leave the transmission in 1st at a stoplight with the clutch down every single time.

In my opinion, yes. What is the point?

It's not bad for anything though.

I never shift into neutral unless I park. Sometimes I'll coast down the Sylvan hill, to save a bit of gas.. but that's about it.

Edit: I ALWAYS downshift. I rarely use my brakes in the scheme of things.

Say I'm going 45MPH, and I see the light turn yellow/red up ahead. Nomatter what, it goes into 2nd. If I'm close to the light, obviously I have to hit my brakes.

If I'm not, I let the engine slow me down.. all the way until 15mph, where the engine starts to bog in 2nd, so I push in the clutch. I don't downshift into 1st until stopped or going less than 5mph, because it wears on 1st's synchro.

I have a 3 speed manual, so gearing down stops me in a hurry. I can squeek the tires if I downshift into 2nd from 55MPH+... I'm sure my drivetrain loves that. Don't do it often.
