Haswell OC woes: i7-4770K no going to well...

So the rig:

i7-4770K
16GB corsair vengeance 160" CL9

ASUS Gryphon MB

Seasonic 1000 platinum PSU

Silverstone FT03

GTX 780 SC

Sound blaster - Z

Corsair H60 closed loop



The only thing I changed was the ratio to 42, everything on auto. CPU voltage @ 1.2v

4.2 ghz. Bring so cold now in Cali, my idle temps are 33-37.

Ran intel burn rest it hit 100C

Then my clock went from 4.2 to 3.8

Does that sound right??
 
Sorry, I don't know what IBT is and how do I find out what my vcore is? What's avx (sorry just read a tutorial online how to OC haswell)

I do have CPU-z

IBT = Intel Burn Test

If you aren't using fixed voltage you're probably running 1.3v down it.


Unless you plan to play IBT or run similar code I'd just ignore it.

If you have Crysis 3 or BF4 Beta, load them up instead to test your cpu.

H60 isn't that good, and Haswell like Ivy Bridge often suffers from too much gap between the IHS and die. You can delid for better thermal performance if you want to go down that road.

Run intel burn test and HWInfo64. Please report your VID and Vcore. I bet your Vcore is spiking on auto voltage. My Asus Maximus VI Hero did the same thing.
 
how do I change my vcore so it doesn't spike? and how do i change my vid? what are some settings you guys are using?
 
you should not overclock anything until you understand a little more about how Intel CPUs work =/

Corrected for you. I've been overclocking AMD CPUs since the late 90's, but I was massively confused by the new and different options when I got my 4770K. It could be the same for the OP.

VCore spiking and hitting close to 1.3V could explain the temps, but 100C and throttling at 4.2 GHz / 1.2V does sound a little too high. When overclocking Haswell, I find it the easiest to start with a fixed VCore so you get to know the limits of the chip, the typical temps and how they are affected by VCore.
 
Just load up the games you're playing and play, assuming they aren't hardcore and you can't live with a few crashes.

Get whocrashed if you're on windows 8 so you can read the dump for the error code.

124 add core voltage, 101 add uncore voltage.

easy peasy.
 
ah I'm on w7 sp1. Max Payne 3 keeps crashing upon loading, but then again, I think that's more of the game more than my system being unstable...
 
Wow I thought my chip was borked also, I have 4670k and its giving me same oc issues as yours op. Using the asrock extreme4. Used the asrock atuning program to let it manually find a stable clock and it went all the way and said 4.3 was fine but I new that was the case because I tried doing it from the bios and had heating problems. Also it was quite funny how it chose 4.3 because it gave 4.4 and above a red color.
 
Its not the best nerd times for cpu oc. Hw overclock very bad and amd highend comes slow and factory overclocked.
Haswell is so boring i gave it to one of the kids and kept my ib. I think we are past the last true intel desktop cpu. What we see is basically mobile cpu wrapped in desktop name. Perhaps not so fun for us but gives good sense for most usage. Next is armv8 a57 entry.
 
Well, max Payne 3 crashed upon startup (bsod) which led me to believe 4.3 @ 1.25 wasn't enough. Maybe my thermal compound is too little... I mean, from 30's idle to 100c load to scaling back must mean there is something wrong... I bet even intel stock HSF does a better job....
 
Okay, it seems my CPU will not do 4.3 Stable. 4.2 is the max. 4.2GHz @ 1.215v. Funny, unigen Valley doesn't seem to favor the OC, in fact it's almost the same being @ factory or slight OC. However, GPU OC sees the most benefit... Gonna get me some Silver 5. I'm betting I just didn't put enough...

Silver 5, as in Arctic Silver 5? Do not get that thermal paste. Arctic Silver was good say in 2004, not 2013.

You can look at Idontcare's thread on TIMs, temperatures, and bare-die testing. Arctic Silver is outdated stuff, do not spend more money to get an inferior product that is not priced that great either.

The best product that I am aware of is Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra / Pro. Get the cheaper version. Be careful, application directions are different from other thermal pastes.

after reading that thread (thanks rev 11) I'm leaning towards the NT-H1. Easier application, and a bit cheaper, and just a tad worse than the liquid.
 
Haswells run hot unless you're brave enough to delid them, auto CPU voltage is often a limiting factor for overclocking, it will often apply more Vcore than you really need for them clocks and cause higher temps because of it, manual tweaking will help you find the lowest Vcore to run at your preferred speed and help ease up the temps a bit.
