Has it started????

So we took the A4 in yesterday for its routine 5K service (oil, etc) and I mentioned to the service guy that the passenger airbag sensor seemed iffy in that it occasionally turned off even though my wife was in the front seat (it never happened for me). Of course when they checked it with various people at the shop, it all checked out correctly (according to the computer reading). So they tested it with my wife this morning and the sensor was reading a bit "light" compared to comparable cars. Now my wife is thin (5'10", 125lbs), but she weighs enough that she should be classified as an adult and the airbags should trigger. It may be that she is tall and the mass is spread out...don't know...but either way, the sensor was reading differently than similar cars.

So it looks like they will be ordering the replacement sensor/assembly and we'll be living with the courtesy vehicle a little longer. I asked the guy why they couldn't just calibrate it differently...and he said for legal reasons they have to completely replace these items so that the shop is not held responsible for mis-calibrating a safety feature. Might be a load of bull...but I could see where the dealership would want to remove themselves from that liability. As long as it is covered under the warranty I'm not going to argue.

So all of you Audi naysayers can now chime in. I'll be updating my True Delta account at the end of the month to note this fix.

Sometimes when I put my backpack on my passenger seat it reads as a person, if you take it off the seat when the door is closed it still reads as the passenger is there for a bit before the airbag off light comes on. Perhaps she moves around a bunch when she sits down or something confusing the sensor? Can't say thats happened to me before.

I've already said enough about VW quality and want to remain polite, but I hope that this problem is solved and the only one you have for many many years.

I also hope that when I leave work today the sun is shining, it's 70 Farenheit and a feeling of confidence comes over me that makes me feel I can fly. And I can. So I lift into the sky on a bed of small clouds watching the world from below. I meet some beautiful sky-mermaids who cart me off to never-never land where there is an infinite supply of cheese cake and I never get full and never get fat. Before I leave I'm given many bars of .99999 pure gold, which I sell, pay off all my debt, and buy a flawless VW that will never break down and life continues similarly for many decades to come.

once i read the problem i thought "man they should just reprogram the sensor" but i can see why they have the CYA mentality and would want to replace the sensor assembly entirely. can't say i blame em. hopefully they're not trying to gouge you.

that said, it sucks that your car is out for a longer period of time.

Ease up off the drugs son 😛

It's definitely not her moving around. With her sitting in our car, the computer was reading significantly lower than when she sat in another car.

Don't worry, if this doesn't get fixed or if I have other problems with the car...I'll make sure to post them so if VW reputation proves true, you should have plenty of material for your not so polite days.

This is all covered under warranty, so I wasn't going to argue. If I was paying for this I definitely would be looking into trying to recalibrate. The courtesy car is another similarly equiped A4...so don't feel to bad for us.

Her beer farts burnt out the sensor. Stop giving her micro brew to drink.

Coincidentally my service adviser told me that a few years back they had a morbidly obese person (350+ lbs) who drove a Beetle (don't ask me how the fuck that worked) and she kept breaking some sensor in the driver seat, lol

Nice Volkswagen you got there.

Haha, my dog sets off my A4's sensor. She weighs 60lbs though...sometimes my laptop + books would set it off too. I think the threshold is 25-30lbs?

Yea, considering they're the same freaking things.... 🙄

There's no that much interchange on the electrical front; I don't remember coming across any electronic things that were cross compatible between vw and audi. There's a lot more mechanical stuff shared across (cv joints, control arms etc.)
