So we took the A4 in yesterday for its routine 5K service (oil, etc) and I mentioned to the service guy that the passenger airbag sensor seemed iffy in that it occasionally turned off even though my wife was in the front seat (it never happened for me). Of course when they checked it with various people at the shop, it all checked out correctly (according to the computer reading). So they tested it with my wife this morning and the sensor was reading a bit "light" compared to comparable cars. Now my wife is thin (5'10", 125lbs), but she weighs enough that she should be classified as an adult and the airbags should trigger. It may be that she is tall and the mass is spread out...don't know...but either way, the sensor was reading differently than similar cars.
So it looks like they will be ordering the replacement sensor/assembly and we'll be living with the courtesy vehicle a little longer. I asked the guy why they couldn't just calibrate it differently...and he said for legal reasons they have to completely replace these items so that the shop is not held responsible for mis-calibrating a safety feature. Might be a load of bull...but I could see where the dealership would want to remove themselves from that liability. As long as it is covered under the warranty I'm not going to argue.
So all of you Audi naysayers can now chime in. I'll be updating my True Delta account at the end of the month to note this fix.
