I have one left, its laying sideways under my teeth..the dentist showed it to me on the xray, and wanted me to go and get that sucker out..he said it could become infected..so I changed dentists, and this guy does an xray and sees it, and he asks me does it hurt? and I said nope and he said then leave it alone.. I was like yes.. score!! so that sucker is still there...that was like 10 years ago at the dentist..:D

I had the lower/upper of one side removed then a few months later did the other lower/upper side, upper teeth are usually easier to remove and my teeth were not impacted.

1) Get all four wisdom teeth extracted at the same time.
2) During your initial consultation with the oral surgeon/dentist ask them as many questions as possible. Make sure that you are comfortable with their level of expertise, knowledge and past experience with this procedure.
3) I was given one valium pill (I LOVE THIS DRUG!) which I took about 60 minutes before my appointment. Since it was valium I had to have someone drive me to the oral surgeon, sit there and wait then drive me home. I could not take public transportation, cab/taxi or have a friend drop me off. Unless you are allergic to valium I strongly recommend it, oh what a drug!
4) I also had laughing gas and general anesthetic which basically numbs the area around the teeth, your gums, tongue, etc.
5) Each 2 wisdom teeth removal appointment took about 45 minutes which I'm not sure if that is good or bad. The sockets or whatever you call them healed up pretty well afterwards. No weird side effects or anything. Now when I run my tongue over the area which used to house my wisdom teeth, it's all flat and feels like I never had wisdom teeth to begin with.

I chose not to be knocked out because of two reasons:
1) I had to sign a disclaimer form because in rare occurences, people die, or have to be transported to a hospital by ambulance because their heart stops or something weird like that. Plus I wanted to be awake during the operation, I was barely "there" though because the valium totally relaxed me, I could barely walk a straight line the whole day, I basically forgot the entire day and cannot remember anything that happened. Can you tell that I'm addicted to valium? Any other addicts here?

2) "Going under" wasn't covered under my dental plan with Kaiser Permanente so it would have cost me $95. The wisdom teeth removal only required my $10 copay but damned $95 just to knock me out?

Hallo
I had all 4 pulled out the same time. I got a local at the oral surgeon, so I was at full consciousness when he pulled them.
The whole procedure really did not hurt at all. But I should have recorded it on video, because it was kind of funny to be honest. Because all of my 4 Wisdom teeth had 4 Roots that were very long (that?s why they were pulled) so the surgeon had a real hard time pulling them. The 2 nurses had to hold me down, and the surgeon put his knee against me (that?s what horrified me the most , I kept thinking what he hell I is doing) so he could pull them out better and while he pulling he started to swear, because he realized that me wisdom teeth would not give up easily. Poor guy I my wisdom teeth really gave him a hard time.

But anyway see it in a positive manner at least you get 4 nice souvenirs to take home.

I have the theory the only reason God gave use Wisdom teeth is that surgeons and dentist can earn some extra cash.

i had 2 impacted, 2 bone impacted
they didnt come through and they had to go in.
they damaged a nerve and half my tongue was numb for 3 months.
i was so swollen that i got 2 black eyes.
the drugs they put me on didnt make me sleepy but hyper and crazy.
i missed a week and a half of my OAC year and fell way behind.

but thats just me, i know plenty of people that had no problems what so ever.

*kat. <-- ^^^never the same after that.

Hell, when I was 11years old I ripped one of my wisdom teeth out in the movie theater. Hurt like hell, but it was one less wisdom tooth I had to have removed last year. Last year it hurt like hell for 3 weeks afterwards and I had to go in several times for pain treatments.

Good luck, you will need it!

They ain't givin me any more crap. One minor side-effect though, damn bloodstains! So far nothing will touch them. I've scrubbed till it hurt and still nada... Any suggestions?

one word: xylocaine , lotsa it.

then VICODIN.

The pain goes away in several days, but expect to be fully wasted on vicodin to avoid the pain!

take a week off work or something.

My brother had his out in the dentist chair. Local anesthetic. All four at the same time. Bottom 2 impacted, but not the top 2. Said it didn't hurt but he could sense the crunching and see the blood. The dentist got one of the bottom ones out with a little stainless steel prybar and held it up saying "Look at the root on that sucker."

Quite a dentist....

One thing that i can suggest is that you may want to think twice before having a general anestesia. when you are given a general anestesia there is much higher chance of death than if you have a local anestesia. I took out mine about 2 years ago and i only had local anestesia and it didn't hurt at all during the operation. also General anestesia are more harmful for your health. I personaly rather put up with some pain than risk my health or life.

I had one of mine out about a month ago. I'm 29, and I've got all my wisdom teeth worn down to the gumline. Why didn't I get them pulled before? Never hurt, and I DREAD going to the dentist. Local anasthetic, and that sucker was out in about 2 minutes by a dentistry student. Didn't feel a thing.

Only reason I got it pulled was because it started aching about 3PM Sunday. By midnight, I had eaten every damn pill in the house, soaked the tooth in whiskey, OraGel, and every other think I could get my hands on. A little bit of cocaine works well, you mix it with a few drops of water to form a paste, which you apply to the inside of the tooth, and the surrounding gums. Not trying to advocate drug use here, this is strictly medicinal.

Only way I could get it to stop hurting was smashing my forehead on the desk every 15 minutes. It was a looooong night........:( Hurt so bad my vision went blurry.

Now, I've also heard that tea tree oil will deaden tooth pain, but haven't tried it yet. My father, however, has tried it, and said the pain went away totally before he was done applying it. That was several years ago, and the tooth is still there, but has not made it's presence felt again.

The other 3 wisdom teeth are coming out in the next week or so, cause I'm not going to go thru another night like I had with the first one.

Get them out when they aren't bothering you, cause when they do act up, you'd rather be dead. When he pulled this tooth, it was such a shock to not feel the pain anymore that I passed out in the chair..........rofl

Sorry this is a book, it's late, and I tend to ramble......:)

it's not too bad
i had 9 teeth pulled out including 4 wisdom teeth 4 years ago
turned out i had 5 teeth that were below the gumline that needed to come out so I had to go in 2 different times.
Both times I wasn't knocked out and could hear the grinding and cracking of my teeth. I still feel quesy thinking about it.
Healing wasn't too bad. My mom would cook up some food then blend it all in the blender for me
Jello was good too :)

Have to get my four removed this summer through surgery (all are impacted...yay!). I figure I'll go with general anesthesia on this bad boy. As much as I'd like to watch the dentist hacking into my gums, I think he might object, heh.

If you have impacted teeth be scared. Mine was and I spent over 2 hours on the dentist chair because they had to cut little pieces out one at a time. And it hurt like a son of a bitch days afterwards because it seemed like I got my jaw punched from the inside out. And to make things worse, I was bleeding like crazy, all night and I thought I was gonna pass out from losing so much blood. It finally stopped in the early morning and things started to get better but it still hurt like crazy for an entire week. I was wasn't even eating mush, all I had was soup and liquid stuff. Okay have fun now :)

If your doc is good you'll be just fine. I had 4 pulled (under general) and was eating shrimp fried rice the next day (pretty dumb... but true).

I have 2 impacted, and 2 with a chance of coming in. Why not just leave them be?

Anyway, I have an appointment with the Oral Surgeon tomorrow. How much does a general IV hurt compared to local? I can't stand needles! I wouldn't mind taking a pill that knocked me out though.

All 3 of myne were taken out in the beginning of January --

Nitrous (laughing gas) and a general anesthetic (I believe valium IV) for what's termed "conscious sedation" -- I'm told I mumbled a few times during the surgery, but I don't recall a thing. The needle used for the IV is fairly small and really nothing to worry about even if you don't like needles (they use a much larger gauge for blood donations, for example).

My 3 were impacted, 1 very deeply (near the sinus) and had to be cut apart to be taken out. I believe it took no more than about an hour total for the whole thing, but I have no time sense from that day since my mom drove me home and I went to sleep. Also, my oral surgeon stitched the 'flaps' of my gums shut so there were no "sockets" left in my mouth. The stitches were taken out about a week later during my checkup for infection/etc.

It hurt A LOT!!! but following postop directions is very important, especially keeping icepacks on your jaws, eating soft foods, and salt water rinses/mouthwash. I didn't take the prescription pain meds because they made me nauseaus, but I did take lots of extra strength tylenol (you ain't in pain till you've woken up in the middle of the night NEEDING pain meds). I'd recommend drinking lots of water too since your gums will probably be swollen enough that you can't close your mouth entirely and your throat will get very dry.

Besides the inability to eat real food for about a week and the searing pain, it wasn't really that bad :) I haven't been so spoiled by my family in years and probably never will be again :p

I'm 15, and I just found out from my dentist that from the recent x-rays, it doesn't look like I'll be getting wisdom teeth!

I'm getting mine out in about a month, all 4 are impacted. I heard it wasn't so bad though.
