Im 21, 5'4, and weigh alot (260)

I dont eat alot compared to my peers, and am not a straight out, "fat" person. I work out, run. and do all sorts of activities to keep active. Some of my peers suspected i possibly have a thyroid issue. Today i went and did a blood test. I find out tomorrow if i do or not. I want to know if anyone on here had a thyroid issue, and once detected, what was the outcome ? i see there is medication termed thyroid replacement, how does that work as well ? I really am interested in finding out.

Thanks !

I have hypothyroidism. Took a long time for me to finally get blood tested and diagnosed. During that time, I lost my appettite(lost a lot of weight), was always tired/slept and struggled with exercise.

After going on meds(inexpensive and daily) and adjusting my dosage over a year, I returned back to normal and I go back once a year for retesting.

See, I dont have much of an appetite in the morning, so i majority of the time did NOT eat breakfast, i always slept late, and got tired easily i guess. I have more energy now because im back at the gym, i lost weight in december down to 258. I am now 270. This is what prompted me to go to the doc and hit the gym again. This is a ridic. amount of weight to be gained within 4 months. It sucks !!

From what I've seen, patients who properly adhere to thyroid replacement therapy tend have rather good outcomes. The initial issue is just finding the correct medication dosage, and is something that you'll need to work closely with your physician on for the first few months. This is, of course, assuming there's a thyroid issue to begin with.

Either way, starting a food diary sounds like it could be helpful. Many people do a fairly crappy job of actually ballparking how many calories they're taking in daily. 12 lbs. gained in 4 months isn't really a ridiculously large amount, so it's possible it's simply due to dietary changes.

It never gets fixed, but you can take medicine to treat it. It was somewhat random that they found it in my, but my thyroid almost completely ceased functioning and was three times the size it's supposed to be. My thyroids a little smaller now and some of the symptoms went away although I wasn't really noticing them before I was treated (lost most of my excess weight before I found out about it). Putting on pounds is VERY easy to do. Track your calorie intake and you'll be amazed that it more or less matches up even if you are diseased.

I was 22 5'5 215 pounds when I decided enough was enough. Now I'm 27 and 130 pounds (was 150 when I started taking thyroid medicine). Most people didn't consider me fat either, and I did a lot of martial arts so I was pretty agile. However, I definitely feel better now.

I have issues with my thyroid. I went and got tested two years ago when I was having a lot of trouble losing weight combined with always being tired at work. Got put on medication that I'll be taking for the rest of my life, but it seems to have fixed the problems. Took a couple months to get the dosage right and it's a very small pill that I take every morning.

So, did you end up losing weight ? And just curious ? how much ?

Was about 225-230 when I started taking medication and I'm currently about 185. Keep in mind, this was combined with diet & exercise. When I started getting serious about losing weight I wasn't losing much at all, I think about 1lb in the first month or two. After I started the medication I began losing weight more how I expected (about 1lb a week).

The medication definitely kick started my body into losing weight easier. The biggest change was my energy though. I was getting 7-8 hours of sleep and still having to take naps almost every day during lunch prior to medication. That stopped within the first week of taking the thyroid medicine and I haven't had problems since.

Even if you don't have a thyroid you could probably get away with taking a little bit of thyroid hormone to help lose weight without too much harm to you body. I'm surprised more people don't do this.

If you don't have a thyroid issue it'd take dangerous amounts to get any sort of weight loss effect.

Maybe. I'm mildly hypothyroid and take a little extra to the point of being mildly hyperthyroid and notice I lose a few lbs by doing that. Too much can apparently be bad for your heart, though.

i've treated patients who've had hypothyroidism and ended up having normal thyroid function... dietary changes is all it takes.

unless you have hashimoto's...

the docs are positive it's hashimoto's? sometimes, it's misdiagnosed. have you tried extreme dietary changes and exercise for a couple months and then checking your thyroid panel?

I get my thyroid checked every three months or so, and if I made extreme dietary changes and exercised more I'd literally die. Can only get so much thinner : p

Wow, Interesting information guys, this is helping me out. I dont know what the result is yet though. I lost like 8 pounds within a month...or could be less, but when i started excersizing, i would get hot, but i wouldnt sweat, within the week i would be drenched at the end of my workout....i drink a ton of water, esp. at night, so i think i could have a water retention issue too.

How old are you and are you taking any meds?

Were you trying to lose weight during that period? If not, that's never a good sign. That's a yellow flag when it comes to certain pathologies. If that's the case and you don't have a hormonal issue, you should go see your doctor and mention that.

What is the relationship between iodine intake and issues people are seeing? I'm just curious.

Reduced iodine intake is generally the number one cause of goiter, which involves the thyroid and can sometimes lead to hormonal abnormalities.
