Has anyone gone paperless with their bills/statements?

I've been thinking of going paperless with my bills and statements. I would just download all of my statements and save them on an external drive. I can't keep storing statements. Has anybody done this/thinking about doing this?

I can think of two potential inconveniences

1) Instead of statements being automatically mailed to me, I have to remember to go online and download them.

2) I read and examine documents much better when they are physically in front of me. Even at work, we do embrace the paperless initiative, but I still find myself printing many files just because I like to have them in front me of instead of on a screen.

I get all my bills by email and pay them all online. I don't even have a check book.

I dont write checks either; I pay all of my bills online. But that has nothing to do with receiving statements.

yep. all of my personal bills are paperless. I have set up email reminders when my bills/statements are ready and as soon as i get the email, i just go and download the pdf statement to my HD. much more convenient.

now, if I can just convince my mom to go paperless

i receive them online to reduce mail clutter. the billing statement clutter is offset by spam for their other credit cards and dumb transfer checks

I don't get any bills in the mail except from the occasional purchase that I have to finance, but for all of my regular bills (cable, internet, CC, etc) it's all paperless.

all of my bills are paid automatically as well, except for my credit card and rent. I have it set to autopay the minimum balance on my CC every month in case I forget to make a payment, but I usually do it manually depending on how much I have left over in checking in the space between after my rent check gets deposited on the 1st and before I get my mid-month paycheck on the 15th... rent is the only thing I use checks for, and I send that out via snail mail every month.

I get some of them by mail and some not. The bills in the mail never get opened though as I just pay them online... much handier, but some places like to charge horrendous rates just to pay online, so I'm thinking about going back to normal by check billing for them.

I do everything that I can online, and save receipts and bills to pdf's.

Going paperless is still a hassle tho - to remember which you've last downloaded for the multitude of accounts. My latest attempt to be more organized is to have sub-folders in each account's folder, one for each month, and when I save a bill it goes in the corresponding month. That's 12 subfolders for each account, but should be easy to quickly see where I last left off.

As for monitoring what goes in and out of the bank/credit accounts, I use quicken and frequently download/categorize all transactions, which covers the critical timely 'oversight' aspect.

One thing I have started to do now for the last month or so, is to stop using my physical checkbook ledger, and use an excel spreadsheet instead. I actually like this a lot more.

I'm with Bank of America so almost everything is e-billing except for some recurring paper checks they cut for my condo assessments. Notifications for bills are emailed and you can see/print physical copies off their site.

I very rarely write a check.

When available, I have paperless billing. Everyone that I use it with emails me an invoice... I don't have to remember to go online and download it (even though I have it on my calendar to remind me anyway). I save the invoices to PDF, and archive them on a hard drive, for future reference. Been doing it this way for a few years. :)

Bank statements are emailed to me. Cellphone autopays for itself and texts me. Car payments are autopay through bank but the statement is still snail mailed to me (no option to change). I need to get a little more coordinated, but it's a nice system.

all forms of bills email me saying my bill is available online. the only one I have that is not paperless is mortgage, otherwise CC's, utilities, etc are.

I actually never download them, I do not see a purpose in keeping them around.

I don't download the statements... I really should (ditto my paystub). But I just get email notifications. Then pay it all online, PDF the payment receipts.

This however has gotten me in trouble sometimes, as I don't always do it right away, so I'll forget. I need to get a better to-do/reminder system working. Only once have I missed a payment, and this was recent and a little concerning because my email alert options had been botched. This was with citibank, and they just redid some stuff on their site, so I dunno. I had zero'd out the card, but an auto-subscription I had forgotten about came through.

Item 2 is why I won't go to paperless billing. It's much easier to read something like changes in terms and conditions on paper than it is when scrolling down a screen. Plus, I've read plenty of stories from people who missed important information with electronic statements.

You could choose to receive paper statements and scan them to solve your storage issue.
