As i've been reading over some info about an IP course im taking this summer, it came to mind, that i dont know if anyone has gotten DMCA notices from downloading from newsgroups have they?

what happens if you use your ISP's servers? Can they track that? And like MrCodeDude said, how would they even know you were dlownloading to begin with?

I dont understand why Adelphia provides 5 gigs via giganews every month for free, how they promote people to download *possibly* illegal things is beyond me!

But Charter gives you unlimited downloads; you're capped at 45 kb 🙂!

arghhh I am a adelphia user... maybe I need to take a look into this newsgroup thing

Uploaders can and do get notices, you're most likely to have a problem if you're posting infringing material via your ISP servers, leaving your IP right there in the header for the world to see. Posting stuff like that from an ISP server is generally a bad idea unless you're OK with your broadband connection eventually going bye bye.

From what I've read from people in the business, download logs can be kept. But they often aren't, and either way they aren't retained for long -- the storage is too much. Upload logs are much more important, the ISP has to be able to cover its ass in the event of a DMCA complaint.

Well considering P2P to Usenet use is probably like 100:1
yeah I don't see usenet getting extremely popular unless somebody figures out how to neutralize all current and future P2P apps. Fat chance. In a way usenet got too big for its own good, but strangely that has possibly saved it by driving it into pay-to-play territory and keeping people away.

The few noobs that actually do check it out will typically be so frustrated with their crappy ISP service + the learning curve + the rookie mistake of using OE, that they never get into it. That leaves them all running around with P2P apps, and the MPAA/RIAA in hot pursuit, playing whack-a-mole with BT trackers and ED2K link sites.
