Has anyone ever been in Detroit Metro Airport (DTW)?

I'm traveling to Vietnam on vacation and I've hear that it's pretty confusing once you get to Detroit Airport. Could someone help me navigate?

I'm going from Philly to Detroit, and from Detroit to Japan.

I heard once you get to detroit you have to quickly leave the terminal and get on the International terminal or else you'll miss your flight.

I've googled it and it seems like Detroit have 2 terminals (North & McNaMara)

My question is, If i'm coming from Philly To Detroit, which terminal will I be in? North? and Do I have to leave the North Terminal to McNamara terminal to get on my international flight? I'm afraid i'm going to miss my flight because I only have 1 hour in between landing & getting on my next flight.
 
i've flown out of there many times.....

where i needed to be and when always seemed easy enough.... it was on my plane ticket

You're probably going from B/C to A, not McNamara to the other one. Its not that big a deal at all. B/C is for the regional flights, A has ~70 gates for the big planes.

Your only issue would be if you flew to detroit on American and out on a Delta affiliate.

There is just a tunnel between the Delta / NW / KLM 'terminals'
 
Your international flight will definitely be out of the new terminal, but it's hard to say which terminal your detroit-philly flight will be.

It won't be a problem though. How long is your layover? Worst case if you have to change terminals, the walkway undreneath has moving sidewalks so you can cover the distance pretty quickly. Plus, most international flight gates are near the center of the terminal right where the tunnel exits.
 
Yeah. I think the Detroit terminals are like giant circles are they not? Pretty easy to navigate the terminals there.

Nope, one massive fucking long linear line for one, and the other is kind of similar at the end of the trippy tunnel.

I can never remember though. I get crazy tunnel vision inside of DTW. Looking at my ticket, looking at signs - where the F do I need to go? Oh sweet that way.

The place can be kind of daunting, as it is indeed pretty big. But it's also so linear and easy to navigate.

Hmm... I wonder which one it was that was the giant circle then. Not O'Hare... Oh well. I've been to a few over the years, it doesn't matter anymore.
 
I was there just a couple weeks ago. I came in at the end of terminal C and had to make a connection down near the end of terminal A for a flight to Los Angeles. There is a long tunnel connecting the two terminals and lots of those stand/walk conveyors to move you along quickly. Didn't take too long to get to my next flight...maybe 10 minutes at most.

My layover was about an hour so I even had time to grab a quick bite to eat.

the northwest terminal is awesome, and you can actually forget that you are just outside of detroit when you are there. the other terminal will easily remind you that you are just outside of detriot.

If you are in the nice terminal, get a burger at Max and Ermas!!!
 
You guys are confusing the 2 different terminals with the 2 sections of the McNamara terminal. The McNamara terminal has the main A section, and the undergound tunnel to the B & C gates.

The North Terminal is WAY far away from McNamara and is not connected to it in any way. You have to take a bus to get from one to the other. So, if you're flying into the North terminal (basically, if you're not flying a Delta/NWA flight), you're going to be cutting it pretty close there.
 
So If i'm not mistaken,

My flight from Philly to Detroit I'll be in Concourse B/C.

Once I get to Detroit, I only have 1 hour of layover. Will I have enough time with all the security checks?

I have to leave Concourse B/C and get to Concourse A via a TUNNEL to get to my international flight/gate to Japan?

The worst part about DTW is on the return flight, collecting your luggage (in the older terminal) You have to go downstairs to get your luggage and upstairs to get out, or something similar.

Ok, if you're flying into McNamara concourse B/C, you'll just need to go the tunnel and find your A gate. You don't need to go through security again as you're already past the security stations at that point. So assuming your flight is on time, you should be fine.

And your bags should automatically be transferred to your connecting flight as well, so you won't have to worry about that.

You can travel between terminals without ever leaving the secure zone and your checked luggage will be transferred by ground personel to your connecting flight.
