Has anyone cancelled their wired phone and just use a cell?

2.5 years here with no landline. Landlines are so restricted you have to be home to get the call. You pay for long distance.

It just makes sense to go with a cell.

Are 1800 numbers dialed from a cell phone free?
Because i would hate to waste 20 mins of my cell plan to wait for a staples csr to go check if a price match is ok.

My friend did it, with the Suncom Family Unplan ($50 a month or so for 4 lines, unlimited minutes, and more). They actually spend less on that than they did on a landline and a cheapo plan.

1800 are not free.
All I need is a cell phone and cable modem 🙂

Today I am finally out of SBC hell.
My daughter had her own line but I cancelled it today and her Nextel i530 will be here tomorrow. As of tomorrow we will be an all Nextel family. Finally, when the phone rings or beeps, it will be someone that we have given permission to call.

SBC sucks. Goodbye forever SBC.

I went from not having a cell and a line line to no land line and a only a cell three month ago. So far it's been good. Only problem I've had so far has been when the dam battery on my cell phone has died. My phone does not works when plugged into my charger so I have no phone service while the battery is charging. I guess I'm going to have to get a spare battery. Other then that I love it.

Oh I have unlimited local calling for 45 a month through my Canadian provider.

We were without a landline for two years, but now that we live out in the country, we get zero cellular reception and are stuck with dial-up modem. When these things change, we'll probably drop the landline again.

still have my landline, costs about $30 per month max,as i have NO long distance carrier.

I have had the same phone# since fall of 1980.

My work pays for my Nextel,but the minutes on the phone # are very low;
and they have reminded us recently that they may have to turn the phones off;
AGain, just like they had to last year for 90 days,{what a pain that was}🙁

I've been cell only for 3 years. The only downside I've found is getting food delivered. Most places won't unless you have a land line to be able to verify the address.

I haven't had a landline in 2years since I moved to my new apartment in Chicago. I am free!!!!

My cell is my only line...

yeah we did it. Me and my wife have a nice family package. We had so many minutes with the plan that we just turned off hte land line.

that was like 2 years ago. I dont miss it at all

All you cell-only people, how do people reach you by phone if they don't already have your number?

I went through hell last year when one of our newer employees didn't show up for work one Monday. He was a very dependable person so after he was two hours late I called his house. I got a the recording that said the number you have reached has been disconnected, no further information is available. I call information, but they have nothing.

I figured he didn't pay the phone bill for some reason, but I still didn't know why he wasn't at work. Tuesday and Wednesday he doesn't show up either. Our rules are that if you miss three days of work without contacting us, you are terminated. So they send out a registered letter on Thursday informing him that he's been terminated.

The next Thursday I get a frantic voicemail from his wife asking how could I be so brutal as to fire the guy while he's laying in intensive care, then calling me a lot of bad words. Unfortunately, she doesn't leave a number to call her back. The following Monday she calls back, and this time I'm there to take the call.

It's now two weeks since he didn't show up for work, and I finally find out why. They went away for the weekend and had a bad accident about 300 miles away. He was hospitalized, she had a concussion and was released. She knew she needed to contact us but couldn't remember the exact name of the company (he had only worked for us for a couple of months) due to her concussion, and she couldn't get home to look it up. So she had changed his cellphone voicemail greeting anticipating that someone from work would call and explained the situation on the voicemail greeting, leaving the number of the hospital.

Except the guy had recently cancelled his landline phone in favor of a cell phone, and neglected to tell me. So I didn't have his cell number, and had no way to get it. She didn't get the registered letter until a week after it was sent because that's the first time she went home.

I finally got things straightened out but it was a major league hassle for everyone involved, not the least of which was having his health insurance cancelled while he was in the hospital.

A shorter example was my elderly neighbor who became very ill and I had to call an ambulance to take her to the hospital. I couldn't reach her son to tell him because he also dropped his landline in favor of a cell phone, and I had no way to get his number.

Interesting story kranky - there should be some sort of directory of cell numbers... Wonder if this VoIP (voice over IP) is going to cause similar confusion?

I am using just a cell phone here.

Had to take my tivo to a friends to get setup but now its on my network and running like champ.

I may stick with this for a long long time

I switched to cell just last month. Only exception is that I also orderedVonage since I call home to Germany on occasion. And its kind of a nice backup.
Vonage works great! I am really happy making the move.

Oh... and the cell... well that was kind of a revelation... there was a whole different world out there I knew nothing about... lol 🙂

Only bad thing is that if the power goes out seems cell phones are the first to go......landline still works most of the time, at least in my area.

Why the heck would a cell phone stop working ?

Yep, no land line for years. Only problem is that Domino's Pizza won't deliver to me until I go in and verify the number.
So I get Papa John's instead.

how do they verify the a landline number to the home address? how do they know you're calling from a cell?

also for people saying they don't get as much telemarketers calling, doesn't that depend on who you give out your number to and not on cell vs landline?
