In chronological order of which ones blew me away first...

Marathon 2: Durandal - I've never played a game with action, storyline, and great graphics before and this one gave me all three at once. The second best game ever.

Harry the Handsome Executive - Very addicting, this is the one that got me into arcadey games.

Warcraft II - The music and graphics really set the atmosphere for this one, and it was the first strategy game I enjoyed.

Diablo - Same as above but stronger atmosphere and the first RPG I've ever enjoyed.

Lands of Lore: Guardians of Destiny - The game with the best atmosphere, ever. The Dracoid Ruins level is possibly the most captivating level ever made. The third best game ever.

Crusader: No Remorse - Graphically this game was and still is a beauty. The crisp coloring of blood, fire, and acid were very memorable and the action was top-notch. No game does violence better than this one.

Super Mario Brothers 3 (SNES version) - The ultra-happy music and bright colors hooked me into the platformer genre.

Starcraft - I spent almost 5000 hours playing this game on the BNet. The vast amounts of custom maps like Snowbound, Scary Movie 3, and Lurker Defence turned me into an addict.

Deus Ex - Hands down the best game ever. Everything I've said about games previous to this is present in Deus Ex and much more. Warren Spector made a classic and one I still play several times a year. This game owns my life.

Kirby's Super Star - Although short, the vast array of power ups and baddies gives this platformer great replayability, and it's the only one that really seems epic in my eyes.

Hitman 2: Silent Assassin - Finally, a stealth game that wasn't too linear. This game is not only great for sneaking around but when it comes to blowing out the brains of large groups of civilians, this one ranks high.

Mafia - The most polished game ever when it comes to artistry. Everything from the textures to the story and soundtrack are easily movie quality if not moreso. Playing the campaign is classic and the option to just roam around the cities while running over people is a great time killer as well.

Far Cry - A typical FPS on the outside, but when it comes to AI this game hasn't yet been beaten. They almost always attack in different ways during different playthroughs and aren't easily tricked like the enemies of most games before it.

Baldur's Gate II - No game I've played so far has as many quests to finish, as many items to collect, or as many areas to explore as this one. This game defines epicness.

As you can see, the 199x games outnumber the 200x by quite a bit on my list.

I was pretty impressed by CoD2. I thought the immersiveness was amazing and I've been playing FPSs forever.

Well, let me see, in my years of playing videogames, i ony have come across several games that truly blow me away.

Phantasy Star 1,2 and 4. I agree with above poster, definitely amazing game, speically 1 and 4. 1 for 3D graphic in a sega master system and 4 for tieing up most fo the plothold in the past 3 games, which took place in 3 thousand years.

Soul Calibur II for DC Come on, got to admit it, that was the BEST 3d fighting game in that time period. Best launch title you can ask for.

Xenogear and Xenosaga serie. These game contain some of the best story telling and most epics ending you can imagain. And all the CS in Xenosaga serie really bring story telling to the next level. Unforturnely, most peopel are unable to stand the vast amount of cs in this game thinking it is a GTA or a shho them up or something.

Resident Evil for ps and GC. Resident Evil for ps was the best game that was ever created at that time, combine with detail graphic and exploration. And the GC version give it a super face lift and made it look amazing in additinoal to good game play.

I forgot to add one game to my list earlier: Ballistics. This was a fairly generic arcade-style racer but had an incredible sensation of speed, far beyond anything else I've seen.

I suppose the "blow away" factor of a game depends more on graphics and presentation and doesn't really take the gameplay into account, which is ultimately what keeps you hooked on the game.

7. MDK for the PC. With so many Doom clones running around, it was such a relief to find a game that offered something new. Amazing level design: some parts as if inspired by reknown Swiss artist H.R. Giger. The main character has a bizarre parachute/glider to traverse the huge, bizarre landscape.

I never played the first one but the sequel, MDK 2, was great. Those bomb disabling puzzles where you had to follow the wires around were quite innovative.

Oh yeah, Decent was also pretty awesome, especially the multiplayer. Flying around in really cool levels was a blast. Go go purple death blob gun!

I'm still playing D2 online with some people on another forum. We generally play every weekend, although I haven't had time for it during the last week or two.

2D scrolling shooter: Ikaruga. The concept is so simple and yet... wow. Excellent music too.
MMORPG: FFXI. My first MMO, but still, the storylines and plot are excellent. Also excellent music. Best score of any game I've ever played, period.

I gotta say, Descent was awesome too. I remember playing this on a demo PC when I was much younger... had my twisting my head and neck, I damn near fell down a few times while playing.

The only games thats ever wowed me(that I can remember) are FF7 and maybe Residen Evil both for PSX. Then when Dreamcast came out I had seen NFL2k,Soul Calibur and Sonic I was blown away. As far as PC goes I was blown away by Quake 2 once I bought my first 3D card(Velocity 4400 16mb) and then Far Cry was the next big step IMO.

I had played Quake 2 in software mode for a long time and when I switch opengl it was amazing.

almost broke my controller playing this damn game. never has there been a more irritatingly hard game made :(

at what setting? Normal mode had a few hard parts but for the most part it wasn't to bad. The last boss was probably one of the easiest. I think I beat him second time around.

Hardest part was fighting the one boss which if I remember correctly was a angel type boss in a church. I think????

Either way it took me a few tries on that one.

Both good. Op Flash was the only game I've played for more than 24 hours straight... I think I did 36 hours in one session, simply because you have to finish the level in one go, with no saving and checkpoints few and far between. Very intense game because you're always one shot away from it being over.

In terms of story, Planescape: Torment hands down, very, very well written.

Act Of War.
First genuine RTS game since Total Anihilation and TA: Kingdoms.
All the others are just resource wars.

Morrowind, but not Oblivion.
Not only didnt Oblivion fail to blow me away, it wasnt even as good as Morrowind.

As for new games, I have high hopes for Supreme Commander but thats about it.
Everything else looks like the same game with better graphics. EA Sports is particularly notorious for this.

This is an interesting way to put it and creates another such question in itself: what games have owned your life? :) In other words, what games have you spent a ton of time with, say over a year, in some form or another?

My list would consist of Lemmings (and Oh No More Lemmings, its expansion), Infotron (Mac port of Supaplex, an old DOS game), Descent 2, C&C Red Alert, Freespace 2, Unreal Tournament and Deus Ex. I played and/or modded all of these for several hours daily, for at least two years each. For Freespace 2, it's been over seven years. I consider it the best game of all time and it's the main thing I'm into at the moment.

The last recent game that really amazed me (And by, "amazed," I mean the entire game for the most part) was Ninja Gaiden, so much so that I've owned two copies of the original and one of the Black version. I just don't have the attention span for video games that I once had, so I guess I'm still waiting for the holy trinity (Mind blowing graphics, story, AND gameplay).

The old school games that still amaze me to this day:
Fallout/2
BG/2
Planescape: Torment
Doom - First time seeing this was pretty much jaw dropping awe.
Rise of the Triad - Although many would argue differently, this game tore Doom a new one.
System Shock 2 - I'll never be the same again.
Full Throttle
Sam & Max - Still cracks me up whenever I play it.
Day of the Tentacle/Maniac Mansion
And my all time favorite (I can't believe nobody mentioned this :Q): Grim Fandango

I've played so many games that I no longer look to be amazed but instead just to find familiar challenges to what once existed.

In any case, Planescape was a lot more amazing story wise than Half-Life. Doom was amazing just getting it working over the modem with a friend and being able to see each other. Quake was amazing because it was the first time I'd played a real game against other people online. Ultima Online for the same reason, but on a much grander scale.

The most recent amazement would probably be Mario Kart DS and how flawlessly it works over the air with other people around you.

I'd say most of the amazing points in my gaming history have simply been the games where it allowed me to link up with other people in new and unique ways.

Well, I guess it goes beyond that too, recently I was finally finishish Prey. And theres this level where basically you open doors and behind them is nothingness, but as you enter the room builds itself around you. I think it's fair to say those rooms blew me away. As well as the rubix cube puzzle.
