Why does expulsion have to relate to schoolwork?

I'm pretty sure Harvard has made a statement that she won't be expelled because it didn't involve schoolwork. However, one of the Crimson articles cited precedent of at least one prospective applicant being turned away when it was discovered that they had plagiarized articles for their local newspaper.

Big difference between a prospective student and one that has been there for over a year.

I was under the impression she got the deal after she was accepted to Harvard.

Although even if it was the book deal that sealed the deal it still seems a little too extreme.

Are you serious? It doesn't have to relate to schoolwork, but it certainly has to school related.

She took this on as an independent project. A job. It's between her and her publishing company.

What if she had gotten a DUI? Should we kick the thousands of students that get in trouble with the law every year out of school because they are not of outstanding moral character?

Um... that is actually quite common in many colleges. Most universities believe there is more to an education than what is taught in the classroom and are quite involved in the non-academic aspects of student's lives. I don't agree with it, but it's true.

You can lose your job because of it, why should a university student be immune?

Yes, I'm serious. No, I don't think something should be school-related to be considered cause for expulsion. See the reasons I posted previously in this thread. If a school had a policy that DUI would result in explusion, then yes I think a student should be expelled for it. I don't think any school has such a policy though.

It doesn't matter if her writing experience had any impact on her acceptance, and it doesn't matter that her plagiarism has nothing to do with her schoolwork. It's an embarrassment to the school, and they would be justified if they expelled her, even though they've chosen not to.

as a sidenote, there was an article in my local paper (fri?), which stated that publisher Little Brown asked bookstores like Barnes 'n Noble to pull the Opal book from the shelves.

'How Opal Mehta Got Kissed,' Then Got Pulled

Listen to this story...

All Things Considered, April 28, 2006 · The coming-of-age novel by Kaavya Viswanathan, a Harvard sophomore, has been recalled from bookstores after numerous passages were revealed to have been plagiarized. Karen Holt, deputy editor of Publishers Weekly, says withdrawing a book is not unprecedented, but it's extremely rare. Melissa Block talks with Holt.

Honestly, the plagiarism doesn't seem aggregious. It looks to be more along the lines of her having read the McCafferty novel, and then--appreciating the style--being influenced by it to an abnormal degree in her own. It should definitely lead to the book being scrapped, but I'm not sure if it should bring about an expulsion.

oh she certainly took more than style. its pretty blatant.

Not that bright if you ask me.

It's a grey area, but closer to black than grey :)

Maybe if she'd done the exact same thing, but half as many sentences were similar...she'd get away with it. Right now it's clear that copying was her intention.

Yay, but then they need to expel most if not all of the professors as well.

If their plagiarizing is as egregious as this, then they should fire the professors. This is just so blatantly obvious, it is almost laughable.

I don't think it's just your university.

My friend is Indian and he tells me that it's very well known that some Indians behave this way on the jobsite, too. They'll get a job by bullshitting their way in, they instantly install Yahoo IM on their computers, then they ask more experienced friends in the circle how to perform their work tasks.

His family has been here for the last 30 years, but he's leery of the Indians that have been coming lately.

Anectdotal evidence isn't worth much, but we had an employee try that at my company. The only reason he lasted 2 weeks is because his manager was on vacation his first week.
