Why is anyone surprised?

Modern law schools teach that law has nothing to do with spirit or morality. It comes down to "the letter of the law". The explicit wording of the law and how it can be applied is what lawyers practice.

If you aren't scared by it, you should be. These people see nothing wrong with applying 200 year old laws to explain why they should be allowed access to your cellphone with no warrant. Not because it's right, but because they found a way for the wording to be interpreted that way.

These same folks don't just argue the laws. They make the laws (most politicians are lawyers), they rule one the laws (judges), and they teach the laws.

I.e. - they currently control our entire society. Is it really a surprise we're as screwed as we are? He's a member of the ruling elite. Of course he's an entitled douche.

The bolded...not.

Not that this story has any relevance here, but I have been trying to make the below distinction, like forever. Amazing how many otherwise educated and bright people are confounded by a basic yet foundational concept.

It's not that. It's that, when there's a speech, it's a monologue instead of a dialogue. So, if someone says something controversial then comes to your school to make a speech, no one can go into a dialogue with him. Instead, they just have to sit there and listen. Some people would prefer to have a discussion wrt the controversial statement.

Jeez, what a huge prick. And once again, Mr. Edelman had his ass handed to him on a silver platter.

Love this exchange from this second anon small business owner....
And I will email and call HBS about you trying to abuse the negotiating tactics which you teach.... or try to.

You should be ashamed of yourself and the business practices you exhibit. In effect, trying to make a business lose money and trying to make someone bend to ridiculous claims you feel strongly about.

You told me that you were getting a refund for your certificates and I was OK with that because NO ONE in retail should have to deal with someone whose ego is as large as yours.

Good luck with your claim.

None of your requests will be met under any circumstance. As a matter of fact, you are NOT welcomed back... ever. We will in fact call the Boston Police department and have you escorted out for trespassing.

LMAO

I'm sure this is one of those tip of the doucheberg situations.

Yep, even given the benefit of the doubt for his apology, he seems to have a habit of this type of behavior. One of the legion of people who think gaming the system is smart business.

Don't feel bad for these mom-n- pops restaurants. They screw you any chance they get. Try to order something from a restaurant for delivery or pickup. Then try ordering the same thing in the restaurant to go. Most likely the prices will be different (cheaper when doing it in person). That's how it is in K-Town, at least.

That's like that everywhere.

Try ordering room service and they tack on their $5 delivery charge.

And you shouldn't feel bad for them as this db has gave them a super amount of publicity. The db even state their food is delicious. Good people.

No, I'm talking about pickup as well. If you call and tell them you will be picking up they charge you the internet price, which is higher. I'm assuming that these are the same restaurants that signed up with Seamless.com and that's where the extra price is coming from. I don't like paying more than what I have to so I just drop by, order, and go home. Can't do that for some Japanese places on St. Marks street on weekend nights, though. They refuse to do in-store takeouts because they're so busy. Zero fucks are given for loyal customers...

I have little patience for careless, nickle-dick businesses that will hide behind BS like "mom & pop" and "oh, our website is out of date". Fuck you.

The restaurant managers first reply of offering a partial refund earned him what followed. He's a dumbass. The first response should have been "your card has been refunded the $4 (or the full amount), sorry for the inconvenience, hope you enjoyed your meal, see you next time".

The restaurant's shortsightedness is thoroughly eclipsed by the massive douchebaggery of Ben Edelman though. All I can conclude is that, as usual, the world is chock full of fucktards.

Honestly, offering a $3 refund instead of $4 is probably just a mistake as well. If he knew it was for $4, he would have offered that. But as a small business owner, you're working 12-14 hours/day and juggling a thousand things. You're flying by problems and commands every second.

Let's just say that the owner should have changed the website earlier and the Harvard dude should have been... well... more human.

$4 is what he is owed. Anything more is him being an absolute dick. If the state authorities want to step in for a fine, then that's business between the regulatory board and the restaurant, not some asshole customer.

I just sent him a nice email:

I have been a lawyer for 15 years, and my mother was an attorney and judge for 30. Unfortunately our shared profession is constantly dragged down by jackasses like you. You are a perfect example of the kind of tone-deaf, blithely arrogant bully that gives our profession a bad name. The revelation that this is in fact your second go-round of browbeating an Asian restaurant over a few bucks - http://www.boston.com/food-dining/r...tory.html?p1=Topofpage:Carousel_lead_headline - just confirms my view that you are an irredeemable troll.

I am quite sure your "apology" was forced, and a precondition of your continued employment. If I employed you, whether as a lawyer or a professor, you'd be out the door today, because you are simply an embarrassment. Fundamentally you are no different than Judge Roy Pearson.

In summary, in case I haven't been adequately clear, fuck off, you whiny little pussy.

Regards,

[My name]
