Well you cant hide forever. If it doesnt beat the 980TI it doesnt beat it. Then you have to try and show other features to sell on.
We still have to see how it pans out. But there is no reason to hide performance anymore if its not because its slower. Its directly bad to hide it if its faster. Right now GTX980TI sells like hotcakes. Its not going to be easy to sell a complete rebrand line except the Fury either.
If its faster than GTX 980 Ti, its also a good thing to be silent. Impact can be bigger, especially when people think that the "reality" based on rumors is otherwise.
Example was first iPad. When it was in development, rumors were that it will cost 999$. When it came to life the price was in fact 499$, and to that moment nobody apart from Apple knew that. The surprise made gigantic positive leap in how people thought about it.
