i have tried to run several live versions of different linux distributions but to no avail.

tried ubuntu and simplymephis 6.0, everything was ok till this message would come up repeatedly.

/bin/sh : cannot access tty; job control turned off

i tried each half a dozentime and eachtime this comes up. tired to google the problem but to not much success.

tried Knoppix which i was told was quite good as well the a message comes up saying

can't find KNOPPIX filesystem, sorry.

i then gave SUSE Linux 10 a go, and hit a snag there though i didnt record what the message was in thgat instance.

this leads me to think i have a hardware problem somewhere.

this is my system spec.

ASUS P5B Deluxe
Intel C2D E6600
NEC 4571A DVD
Wester Digital Cavier 250GB
ASUS EN7600GT Silent
Corsair XMS2-6400 RAM
Creative Audigy 4
WinXP Home

some help would be much appreciated as i would really like to run a linux distro alongside my winXP

Could be hardware problems.

Do you have occasional problems with XP? Like BSOD or do you find that DMA access is disabled causing slow disk performance (check somewere in device manager)? Do programs sometimes crash or you get corrupted displays?

Are you overclocking your system any? especially memory?

Try memtest86. I don't know for sure, but maybe knoppix will boot-time option to boot into memtest86 instead of trying to startup, but otherwise you can find floppy and iso images so you can boot up your system and test your memory.

This is the first thing I'd look at.

Next thing is to check for overheating. Especially with the powersupply, which can cause power flucuations and cause odd mess-ups. Like let your computer run for a while and then pop off the case and see if there is any realy hot spots or something like that.

phew,

thanks for the help, i did the memtest and that came back good.

Cool.

Probably the next release of whatever distro your using will support that hardware out of the box. Such is how Linux is with hardware support sometimes.
