VRM cooling, fine tuning of dual 200 watt gpu's is part of the juggling act, both companies face with these beasts.
Radeon 5970 Overclocking: The VRM Temperature Bottleneck

IMO, the cards are going to have enhanced versions of the voltage regulating/monitoring circuits the single gpu cards have now to regulate power use/ pull from the sources(each 8pin, the slot) and where it goes (each gpu/memory bank) for it all to run cooler and more efficient. And not have a hot side , or hot spot.

Demo runs fine for me apart from the bit where Flemeth (sp?) appears and breaths fire everywhere.

Thats with everything turned up as far as the demo allows and 2xAA and a much weaker computer than you guys (c2q@3gz and an HD6950).

were you using dx9 or 11? My computer was a slideshow, with lots of black textures in dx11, while dx9 ran perfectly even with max AA/AF and the highest details I could use. I didn't use fraps on it but it was at least 50 fps even at max details in dx9.

Argh!!! You could have used a spoiler alert or something. I didn't know Flemeth would be back.

yeah, I accidentally found that out before finishing the demo... I guess we'll just have to make sure that she is deader this time!

Dx11 (at 19x12 res) haven't tried dx9.

I'm on my laptop at the moment but I'll give it another go later and check the settings.

I'm pretty certain everything except AA was maxed, although I cant remember an AF setting.

I'd guess my FPS were in the upper 50's most of the time, I'll get a capture of the afterburner graph later as well if you like.

So a benchmark without any numbers, on a card we have no information about, on an uncompleted and unreleased game, on a DX version nobody cares about. Excellent work Hard OCP! :p

don't bother. I just had issues with dx11 on my rig and I saw posts from others with similar issues so I just assumed that everybody had that problem. The code is several months old anyway, so it probably just works ok on some rigs and not so well on others. As long as I can play dx11 with the actual game release I'll be happy.

And i don't
D:

At least we know there are no wooden screws and it runs a demo game on some sort of beta drivers with results that evidently pleased the writer.
:whiste:

when are you getting one? or did you piss off amd enough that they gave you the cold shoulder?

That would be awesome...then apoppin could start a rumour site called "sometimes-correct.com", and just crap on AMD every chance he gets.

There would then be balance in the world! :p

OK then, most of the DX11 effects are disabled for the demo anyway so chances are that the full game wont run anyway near the same.:(

he's got more than ONE NEW card................:whiste:

Come on, please .. you know i am under-NDA with AMD and Nvidia.
():)

i am surprised that no one has commented on the 8-pin+8-pin PCIe connector shown on the HD 6990 at HardOCP. Do you think it is for show?
- or are we finally going to break the 300W spec for a single video card?
:whiste:

And my guess on the price?
- if you have to ask or think about it, it is too expensive for you.
:D

What most of you have never quite realized is that i really like AMD Graphics and Nvidia video cards. i switch back and forth between CrossFire and SLI effortlessly (and enjoy evaluating GT 430/HD 5770 as well as Super OC'd dual-GPU fire-breathing monsters) without prejudice realizing that some games simply play better on one platform than on the other. i'd hate have to have to pick between them.
--- i like the variety and different vision that each company has; they each do a LOT for PC gaming. i love the balance they provide by being such top-notch aggressively competing companies.

2 6970 GPUs at full clocks with powertune keeping them under 300W until you increase it in CCC? Thats my guess.

lol...pmsl

As for the power plugs, it was always my understanding that the PCIe slot delivered 75 watts, the 6pin delivered 75w and 8 pin = 150w

Even a combo of 6+8 was hitting the standards ceiling!, so we now have cards capable of pulling 375w!
Wasnt there other card that had 2 x 8?, cant remember!

Remember that the connectors are only speced for 75 and 150 watts. They can be exceeded but I don't know by how much. The motherboard has an 8 pin connector and can draw over 150 watts for a high end OC'd CPU.

We already broke the 300w spec on actual power draw. TDP was still listed as below 300w though.

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=216650
Notice also the mention of cards running out of spec on power draw of the different power connectors.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1061446/TDP.png
According to Xbitlabs (where I sourced those numbers), the GTX295 draws over 300w under gaming loads sometimes.
Official TDP spec is still 289w though.

Its funny isnt it. [H] spells it Sneek Peek and the OP spells it as Sneak Peak. :p

Sometimes in life the best peaks to peek at are the ones that come in pairs...

:D

I'm talken bout dem dual GPU vid cards...wut you tink I'm talken bout?

OK, what are the 6990's competitors.

Lets say this card comes out before Nvidia's dual gpu monster.

What do the reviewers test against this ?

Gtx 580/570 SLI ?
Overclocked will this beat 580 sli ? I'm pretty sure, stock it won't.

isn't Sneak Peak a codename for future Intel Chipset? :)

anyway we can know how long he card is, measure the PCIe connection on a real card, and measure it in the picture. then you get the ratio of lengths, and measure the entire card and multiply by the ratio.
i'm at work so i cant do this right now...someone else willing to do the forensics on this one?
