Nothing in single-player where you can just hit load and retry. Greatest challenges I've experienced in games is online with human competition or in MMOs.

I doubt anyone has ever played this game, but I still have nightmares about the final boss in Super Hydlide for the Genesis.

I spent so long getting to the end and had uber stats and gear, but no matter what I did I could barely touch the final boss. I even got to a point where I could take off all of my armour and, because my agility was so high, I could run around the boss and barely ever take damage, but still, I could never beat him. Maybe it was bugged.

Lol I had to go co-op to get anywhere on that difficulty. I kept running out of ammo and died trying to grab weapons.

The one area where you exit the space station after taking the service elevator on Halo 2 legendary was unbelievable. Those stupid bugs would always get me down to almost no health, and then the jetpack equipped enemies always beat me up.

I think that area takes second only to Halo 1, in the cafeteria on legendary. Good god that was difficult.

I'll agree with that one, fights that were no problem before the MOD are near impossible after the mod.

I agree with that...but i think icewind dale 2 was pretty damn hard...

frankly doom was the hardest...can anyone say they beat it without using iddqd or idkfa?

Hmmm Audioslave fan? Was funny because I was playing WiC last night and they had Shadow of the Sun in one of the cut scenes. Was kinda weird seeing it amidst all the '80s music but it worked really well. Great game btw, honestly I think its better than CoH in a lot of ways. I think the low FPS in reviews freaks a lot of people out, its what kept me from buying it for so long. But if you can get 25-30FPS (occasional 18-20 min) its completely playable and a lot of fun.

Super Contra for NES was stupidly difficult. Harder than Contra 1, and definitely much, much harder than Contra III.

Also, Prehistoric Isle for arcades. That's a really old game.

Any of the Doom series in Nightmare mode was a pain in the ass.

Lifeforce for NES was unbearable too.

But the prize goes to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1 for NES. That game was way too difficult for something based on the TMNT. God I hated it.

Yeah that game was hard! I never beat it of course I was proabably 7-8 at the time.

Mortal Kombat 2 or just about any fighting game. We always had to resort to god mode past the fourth level or get raped repeatadly.

For PC, I'd say Rainbow 6 1-3. Each one had at least 1 level that was so hard to do (e.g. the bank in Raven Shield) and took hours of reloads. Maybe it wouldn't have been as hard if I didn't try to keep everyone alive, but they made you feel so guilty for letting even one guy red line:(.

I didn't find that too hard, at least the PC version. Some of Kurt's lockball sequences in his last section could get tricky, and the Max ending was fairly tough, but those were fairly small parts of the game.

On a side note, those bomb disabling puzzles in this were great. That has to be one of the most unique puzzle ideas I've seen in a 3D game.

I have to agree. I just recently tried it again and still couldn't beat it.

Sonic 2.

The game itsself isnt too difficult, its easy, but it gives you a big middle finger with the end boss who i found frickin impossible to beat, i got lucky onetime and beat it.

Ristar pulled this crap as well, damn cakewalk until the end guy...

i didn't either ... but i *hated* the jumping ... and lack of anytime save
-many of MDK2's concepts and ideas were cool and way ahead of their time. i remember playing it on my Rage Fury32 and the GFX weren't bad either.

Castlevania on the NES when I was a kid was the hardest game for me...I recall beating it finally and NO ONE was around to witness the castle falling during the game credits!!
i thought it was SNES ?
--i got it by myself the first time also but by then i *mastered* Castlevania and forced all my friends to watch the Ending replayed. :p
:D

Yeah, there were too many repetitive jumping and lockball shooting puzzles with Kurt, but the sequences for the other two characters were great. MDK2 did have anytime save on the PC though. (I still have it installed and just checked)
