Hard drive questions

hi,
Just wanted to ask a few questions i had in my mind for a long time.

My 3rd HDD ( 1 IDE, 2 SATA) died last month,SATA ones were segate 320 GB 7200 rpm and Samsung 500 GB 5400 RPM, both were used on a desktop for torrent downloading 24/7 for like 8 years (3+5). Is this as it is supposed to be or am i just unlucky.Now am planning to buy 1 new drive and am a bit confused, cause i heard the write cycles is what stresses a HDD so instead of directly downloading to the primary HDD, instead should i buy an inexpensive external ? I use my laptop for torrents as well so Will this particular idea hold good well because i don't want to loose my laptop HDD.

it will cause a drive to die faster than normally as the average home drive is not intended for 24/7 usage.

That being said, an external can work to save expencive internal drives if that is what you want, but the issue with torrenting with that setup is that the USB interface (if USB2 or slower) will greatly limit torrent speed and/or the number of active torrents. USB 3 might not have this much of an issue though.

aye! consumer drives are not rated for the pounding that constant torrenting does to a drive. if you want a drive that lasts, look in to a seagate constellation or WD RE4.

External drives are no better than internal drives. External drives are basically cheaper slower internal drives. It'll have the same failure rate.

As recommended RE4 or nearline sata/nas sata, ones made for 24/7.
