My hard drive started making a high pitched noise a few days ago. I used Cinema Craft Encoder for 7 hours straight the day prior and used it for about an hour that day when the noise started. It was really loud at that time. Now it's not's as loud but I can barely hear it and it's in my ears all day even when I'm away from my pc. My system is set up to be really quiet so it's really annoying even though it's barely audible. Anyway, is there a way to replace my hard drive with a new one without buying Windows Xp all over again? Sorry if this is a newbie question but I am a newbie.

A more convenient solution to move your entire system to a different drive without too many hassle is to use CasperXP. It makes an identical copy of your original XP installation and boots as nothing has ever happened. You can even do that by booting normally and starting it up from the HDD you want to copy. The target HDD can also differ in size no problem as long as the data you want to move is smaller than the target drive's capacity (obviously).

You don't have to rebuy winxp if you reinstall on a new hard drive, but you would have to do a reinstall if you don't use some sort of ghosting tool. You can use the ones mentioned, but a lot of the time a new hard drive will come with some sort of transfer software, I would use that and save a couple bills.
