Hard drive error

I've got a Maxtor OneTouch II External Hard Drive. Was backing up stuff to it and it started generating error messages while trying to copy over some of the files, so I restarted, tried to access it again, but Windows won't detect it. I've tried it on XP and on Vista, but no luck. It shows the hard drive in My Computer, but when I try to access it, I get:

E:\ is not accessible
The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

I accidentally deleted autorun.inf at some point, so I'm not sure if that's what caused it but to my knowledge that should re-generate itself.

I'm guessing I need to somehow rebuild the file structure and hopefully the data should still be intact.. Any suggestions on how to do that? I found this thread, but I'm hoping there's some solution I can do on Windows instead of Linux:

Edit: Hooray! I got to a binary number of posts. My lifelong dream is accomplished!

Click Start / run and type chkdsk x: /f in the run box.

X = drive letter of drive to be checked.

In your case you said it was drive e:

So chkdsk e: /f should work.
(leave a space between chkdsk and e: and leave another space between e: and /f)

And in case that doesn't work, remove the drive from the case and connect it directly to a port on your MB. If it's still not able to be read, download GetDataBack and see if it can recover your files. If it can, get out your CC and pay 69 or 79 dollars for the program.
Now, repeat after me, "Pre-made external hard drives are usually junk and I will not trust my information to them. I WILL pay a little bit more to purchase a decent external case and a HDD with a 5yr. warranty so I can AT LEAST troubleshoot them on an individual basis. I was really stupid for buying this one in the first place, but I was ignorant and didn't know any better." :D
