I stuck Avast! free edition and Malwarebytes on my older sister's XP rig a couple months ago (its an Athlon64 3700+ - all she can afford). Told her to run a scan with them a couple times a week. Then again, her ten year old grandson is always on it downloading crap, so it was a malware-ridden mess to begin with. Basically, they're probably typical of most XP users. At least she's old school with her shopping and banking, so hopefully nothing serious will come of it.

This xp "support out" will only point out that outdated and unsafe system is still less risky than user himself.

This.

My understanding was that there's a good possibility that there are some exploits out there that black hats have been sitting on, waiting for the patches to end.

While that is certainly possible, I was under the impression the way most of these things are written is that the malware folks simply wait for patch Tuesday to see what is being patched, then reverse engineer their malware to take advantage of unpatched systems.

What's a "good anti-virus" for XP now? I heard that MSE is ending support for XP. Can I get a recommendations for AV for XP? Two of my machines still use it... TIA.

PS I used to run Avira Free, I suppose I could install that.

I read somewhere that MSE will be supported for an additional 90 days.

Dude, I support the fast food industry. We'll probably be using POS systems with Windows XP on them for another 10 years! Hell, we still have POS systems in service that we need to support using DOS 🙂

Think about that the next time you pay with a credit card!

Damn, why don't the credit card companies protect us from this risk?

Or better yet, why couldn't Federal Law limit our fraud risk to a maximum amount, say $50, and why can't most Credit providers usually waive that?

Oh, wait...

:awe:

we just went through a massive upgrade push for 7. seems to be working out ok. we have alot of systems with embeded though. I wonder how much i will cost to get new panels in every data aq system we own... must be thousands of them the world over, and is there a 7 embeded?

All our school PCs run WinXP.

Tax dollars hard at work. (They also downgrade any new computers from Win7 to XP even though all the software we use is compatible with Win7 which just blows my mind)

Let me guess: They have Novell too? I have around 44 XP's left in my middle school but we won't lose sleep if the district tells us to get them off the network.

Patches, I'm depending on you son to pull Win XP through, it's all left up to you.
Two days later papa passed away. And I became a man that day.

*GROAN*

Anyway, I have been warning my sister about this but my cheap - really cheap - brother-in-law has the shakes just thinking about spending a little $ for a new OS.

Stupid Microsoft. I still run XP virtual machines and now MS Antivirus no longer works properly, with constant nagging about not being protected.

It's not just that, it seems like Microsoft sabotaged their anti-virus software on XP.

I cannot count how many computers I've been called to "fix" because security essentials is basically locking up the entire system making it unusable.

There is no other explanation for so many different systems, lethargic performance all of a sudden, bear through the looooong MSE uninstall, and immediately when the MSE software service is cut off system performance is back to it's peak.

this is minor compared to the random junk my dad installs

You should educate him about things like "installers" to DL a game or driver, so many people fall for that crap and wind up with all kinds of malware, toolbars, trackers, FBI virus, ect.

This.

From what I've read there is a gigantic problem of bogus XP installs in Asia and almost none of these systems have any patches on them at all, not even SP1 or SP2..

Your banks are still using XP. True first hand knowledge. Good luck in your finances. At least they did upgrade me to 7 finally a few months ago, then during my latest project found 15k people still on XP, and the people who were in charge of the upgrades said "how did we miss those?" Have not heard that any have been upgraded.

As usual you don`t know what you are talking about.
Most banks have paid Microsoft to still support XP!! But that's Ok....you can pretend to know ...

Actually I do know, granted I do not know what agreement has been made. It still doesn't change the issue at hand. As usual, asshats on the internet. I am referring to users, who were not supposed to be on XP as of the end of the project at end of 2013. What is laughable is you trying to tell me what I do and don't know about where I work.
