wow, the Periodic Table of Elements thing that the BoingBoing review shows off looks sooo cool. And I say that as a non-science person too, lol. My younger bro would love to play around with that.

I have only read one. NYThttp://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/01/technology/personaltech/01pogue.html

I knew I would agree with this guy after reading the first few paragraphs. It looks pretty damn cool... i bet they cna make an app that would somehow allow you to take notes on it, right?

I hope these apps to also come to computers... thats really the best part about iphone/itouch/ipad are the apps. I think ipad apps could translated to computer apps controlled with touch or mouse.

“This truly is a magical revolution,” goes another. “I can’t imagine why anyone will want to go back to using a mouse and keyboard once they’ve experienced Apple’s visionary user interface!”

Those are some pretty confident critiques of the iPad — considering that their authors have never even tried it.

with the screen on full brightness it gets almost 3 times the battery life of my Touch. Fucking impressed. 12 hours with full brightness should mean you could get 15-16 with it half way. I know with my Touch's brightness way down I get a lot more juice out of the battery. And it's still brighter than a lot of other PMP's screens.

I was on the fence about this, but the reviews are all pretty good, ugh I'm broke can't be even thinking about wanting this device :(

The big question is, is it worth $500+ to the consumers?
Like someone else said, if you think you need to spend at least $500 for a media centric web-surfing device, then sure, the iPad might be for you. If you're looking to do serious work or you simply just want more bang for your buck, then laptops are still the way to go.

Personally, it'll be interesting to see how the iPad does after all the initial hype wears down.

I really love the doubters...

What gets me is that the younger posters who should be embracing this kind of fundamental change, aren't.

Sigh...

Cue the but it doesn't have X bitching.....

Do you-all really imagine 5-10 years from now that anyone wont have a tablet computer?

Honestly, I could give a rats ass about who builds it or what OS it has, Id be as happy with an Android or a Chrome tablet, its the fucking future of tech, the world changes, and those who resist are swept into the dustbin of morons...

I actually remember the first widely available calculator, and how people responded to it.

What will I do with one of those?

Sigh....

For me, it's the justification of cost. What does this device provide that I can use it for that is WORTH $500 of my expendable income? Right now, there's nothing that it offers that can justify that price. For some, it will be easily justified. I think in 5 years, it will be hard not to have one.. but who knows what will be on them. Maybe I'll be running a touch version of Aperture 5 with tether support for my DSLR. Maybe cell networks will be built up enough that I won't be paying $100's per month for multiple connections to the internet.

It's all speculation. Right now, the thing looks great.. however, is it $500 worth of great.. for me, no.

I guess I don't understand folk who don't tether with their phones either...

I do tether with my iPhone.. but can you setup an AdHoc via an iPad to do the same thing there?

The main thing I'm thinking though.. is I want to be able to pay $50/mo and have internet access on all of my devices (at home, cellphone, tablet, etc...).

Just watched Andy Ihnatko's preview of the iPad.. wow.. I'm impressed with it. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have an iPad.. I just don't have enough of a justification to spend $500 on one right now.

The good thing about flash is that its better than Java. Its faster. Java is just plain shit slow. Sigh.

Hey, I wouldn't have spend hundreds of dollars on a calculator in 1970 just to do math problems I could easily do by hand for free. It wasn't until calculators became cheap enough that they were worth it.

Similarly, at the moment, people already have so many other devices that do all the same things the iPad does. Oh boy, it can access the Internet. It can play movies. Unbelievable. I wish I had something that could do those things. Maybe in a few years the tablet form factor will have evolved to the point where they replace laptops for many users. But we're not there yet. The iPad is too limited to replace laptops for a lot of people and it doesn't have enough features to be worth it for smartphone owners either. It's probably best as an alternative to people considering a netbook, but at the moment it's more expensive and less capable than one.

Yeah, that's why Adobe is having to build hardware acceleration into Flash, because it's so fast.

The only use I have for it right now would be to replace my iphone while in bed reading the internet. I'm not paying 500 bucks for that. If they make it useful, then I'll get one. Also, it needs multi-tasking and an option to develop apps without paying a yearly fee. Installing without an app store for advanced users would be great too.

Most people are going to use it to browse the web, which it's not very good at because it lacks Flash support. I know HTML5 is there, but there are still a lot of sites that use Flash, and you are just going to see missing plug in icons for those.
That may be OK for a smart phone or ipod touch, where you sort of accept a neutered web experience as part of mobility. iPad is similar to a netbook in terms of mobility, so for it, a neutered web experience is not going to cut it.
There is a Netflix plug in, but no HDMI output to plug in your television. So what's the concept here, that you are going to sit on your couch in front of your big screen TV and watch movies on your 10 inch iPad instead?

No.. the idea is you will have a 3G connection or be at a place with WiFi where you DON'T have a 50" LCD in front of you. You can use it there to watch Netflix, read news, play games, etc...

Have you seen the sheer amount of people who are switching to HTML5 for the iPad? Almost all the networks have announced they're doing it, and Hulu is working on a HTML5 version. Youtube is in the process. Netflix... etc... Flash is not going to be an issue for video much longer.

Yes, if you just happened to be carrying a 11 inch device in your pocket (or are happy to see me) when you are there...

Sure, a lot are, but what happens if you go to one of thousands of sites that uses Flash? What then, you paid $500 for a device that can't render a site that a $300 netbook can. What, you gonna sit there and wait till they rewrite it for HTML5? There are more sites than Hulu and Netflix, and many of them don't have budgets to rewrite all their apps to HTML5.
