handle silverfish with house centipedes?

How should I handle the silverfish in my apartment?

  • Get more spiders

  • Introduce house centipedes

  • Get a pet green gecko

  • Boric Powder/Diatomous earth/other chemical warfare

  • Nuke from orbit and build a new apt/move out

I have a lot of silverfish in my apartment. I keep killing them wherever I find them, but my apartment is big and they run around really fast, especially the little ones. They haven't done any damage, or cause any bites as far as I know. It is definitely annoying however.

I was thinking of using house centipedes as pest control. Grab a baby house centipede - or an adult - from a friend's house and let it loose in a corner closet. From what I understand, the house centipedes are completely harmless and they stay out of your way.

The downside is that the house centipede looks way more horrifying than the silverfish.

Thoughts?

I actually find the house centipede beautiful in a strange sort of way. I actually don't believe I had ever seen a house centipede until I moved into my house in 2008 (old house had spiders but never centipedes) and was amazed when I finally saw one. We see them in numbers in Spring and Fall and while I hate to kill them, my wife thinks otherwise. Those suckers are BLAZINGLY fast though.

I would take silverfish over house centipedes, i still remember my sister smashing a centipede on the floor one time in the dark.

It's a great idea.

Then after the silverfish are gone, you can use bolivian tree lizards to get rid of the centipedes.

Silverfish eat textiles. Centipedes are fairly harmless, but they like moist conditions. They may not be happy in your apt. Maybe something like diatomacous earth, or boric acid would work better.

To capture prey they either jump onto it or use their legs in a technique described as "lassoing". Using their legs to beat prey has also been described

For wasps, they retreat after applying the venom to give it time to take effect.

The first point is very cool.. I'd love to see it jumping on the silverfish that started eating through my WOT Book #9 signed by Robert Jordan himself.

The second point.. I HATE HATE HATE wasps and this thing is so badass it can kill them.

House centipede in the lead right now.. almost enough to nullify their appearance which is really quite horrifying.

I see where this is going....

All I have to do is pick the chain of critters that ends in a dog or a cat.

Not like a King Cobra or something ...

(ot)Hey did he ever even finish that story?

It's been years now, but I remember having read about a dozen volumes of that series, then finding out there were still more to be released at that time. I enjoyed it very much, at least the first several, just wish he would have wrapped it up & moved on to another series.

Centipedes are insanely fast, bigger and scarier looking than silverfish, and even though they are harmless, that fact is utterly meaningless when one drops on you in the middle of the night. I'm not really bothered by centipedes, but I would never voluntarily introduce them to a place I was living.

No he started it, but someone else ended it. Robert Jordan passed away due to illness and Brandon Sanderson was commissioned to finish it.

I never knew those things were called house centipedes. Fast as all hell. I see them occasionally but not much.

And those damn silverfish started chewing through my signed copy of the final book he wrote before succumbing to his illness.

I still remember that meeting where he assured fans that he'd finish the series, even if he had to do it from the hospital ICU.

RIP Jordan.

I had NEVER seen one of these house/cave centipedes until last year on my wall it was almost 3 inches long (body) and then all the legs. FREAKED ME OUT. Kill it with fire.

Not sure if it will work. There used to be some centipedes at my home, but they seemed to coexist pretty well with the spiders and cockroaches (before I used cockroach bait to kill them off) By the way, the cockroach bait worked on both cockroaches and centipedes so now the spiders rule.
