Having lived in rural areas in Pennsylvania and Georgia, I can honestly say the type of people that carry guns around with them 9 times out of 10 look like they just stepped off the short bus. I'm sure this isn't always the case, but giving guns to the lowest 10% of the gene pool and trusting them to not be fvck ups is a far stretch.

Heck, just look around here to gauge the average insight of your typical ATOT gun nut (not saying you're all like that, some very nice ATOT members are gun owners). It's the 'nuts' you gotta watch out for.

Yes it would make me nervous (I've never seen it anywhere I've been though). It would make me nervous because 1) guns just make me nervous in general, 2) the people I've met that have been really into guns have always seemed a bit off and 3) I don't entirely understand the mentality that makes someone want to carry a gun around at all times let alone carry a gun out in the open. In addition in a case where carrying a gun in the open requires less oversight than carrying a concealed gun it could mean you are carrying in the open because you aren't even qualified to carry it concealed.

However I would not want to forbid it. Freedom means people will do things you don't like and wouldn't do yourself. As long as what is being done doesn't directly affect me than knock yourself out.

There's a nasty little caveat that goes with open carry. If so much as a coat tail or shirt tail goes over the gun and holster, you are now concealing a weapon and the open carry no longer applies to you.

I think guns have a time and place for them. For instance I think you should check them at the door of a bar. I wouldn?t have a problem if someone carried them in church/synagogue/whatever but I don?t know why anyone would want to bring one in a place of worship in the first place.

Lol, my previous neighbor next door used to open carry 24/7. You'd see him mowing his lawn with his .22 revolver sticking out of the back pocket of his jeans. I'd always ask him, "Joe, you got that safety on?" *

He made my wife Jessie nervous at first, but I got to know him pretty weill, and he was just a true down home country boy with an open, friendly heart -- kind of shy, actually -- who grew up on a farm and may well have never been to Philadelphia (one hour south) in his life.

If you're most accurate with a single-action revolver, why not carry it? Are you suggesting that people should not carry the weapon they are most comfortable (and therefore more accurate) with? Also, the old style holsters are incredibly comfortable. Most of the people who carry openly do so because it's more comfortable, especially in the summer, when it's often not practical to wear the overclothes necessary for concealment.

Additionally, a firearm that is carried in holster ends up showing some fairly significant holster wear after a while. Most of those "POS guns" are likely quite nice mechanically, but are showing wear from being worn every day.

I've never actually seen someone other thank law enforcement carrying in the open.

I think if it became a common thing to see, people would adjust and it might even reduce crimes just by making people think twice before assuming someone isn't protected, but who knows really.

I would however probably feel a bit uncomfortable the first few times I experienced seeing someone do so.

Yeah, I carry concealed, because even though people think Texas is the old west, we don't have open carry laws for hand guns. We can carry shot guns and rifles though.

I've always wanted to see some old timer carrying his Colt Peace Maker and told him to skin that smoke wagon.

So I should hand my gun over to a dude at a bar that might not be able to legally own one anyways? Many states have laws that forbid carrying a weapon in a bar or establishment that sells alcohol for consumption. Teas for example has the 51% law. If a bar or business makes 51% or more of it's revenue from the sale of alcohol for consumption on the property, then they must post a red 51% sign indicating as much.

As far as bringing one into church, why not??? The only people you stop from bring a weapon in somewhere are the people that follow the laws. By enacting laws that forbid people from carrying a weapon into a school, you're only inconveniencing law abiding parents. You are not going to stop the guy that just got divorced, lost his house and his ex won't let him see his children again so he's going to go kill them all. You think he's going to stop and think, I might get into trouble if I carry my gun into the school?
No he's not going to think about that, now you have law abiding dad sending his kid off to class and all he can do when psycho dad starts shooting, is to hide, when if he had his firearm, he could stop psycho dad and save the lives of children, after all. THINK OF THE CHILDREN.

Wrong, they do have safeties. They (a lot) have internal locks and Smith and Wesson just came out with a grip safety on a revolver.

Wrong, they do have safeties. They (a lot) have internal locks and Smith and Wesson just came out with a grip safety on a revolver.

Wow, didn't know. I've never seen one. It was just my "breaking the ice" joke to my neighbor, and he took it that way 100%, so I'm guessing he didn't know about any revolver safties as well. His certainly didn't have one.
