Two reasons:

1) Alcohol.
2) There are morons like that everywhere, in the UK they congregate at football matches, I'm not sure where they pop up in the US of A.

It's a lot better than it used to be though.

Yes, we of course have our share of rowdy drunk ass fans here, but I don't think I've seen too many cases where huge fist fights are started with opposing fans in the stadiums and there by getting banned from attending at all, like your fellow country men seem to be getting banned in some countries from attending games. 😕
