We don't stack up against America, you are the biggest super power on the planet, we lost our empire and super powers status eons ago.

We're pretty happy being who we are.

Not really. You guys moan and bitch about Americans all the time.

any time a Brit talks down about America, I picture him saying "aluminum".

I instantly know that I am better than him.

Why are caravans so popular in Britain? Is it just a cultural thing? People grew up going on caravan holidays so when they grow up they take their kids on caravan holidays? Or is it just some elaborate ruse to convince the surrounding areas that you're all gypsies and have nothing of value, so don't bother invading...

If we say "Aluminum" it would sound the same as when you say it, however that's not an English word the English word is "Aluminium", which if we break it down makes a lot more sense, the "Alu" part sounds like "Al-you" the way that "Tune" sounds like "T-youn" or "Exude" sounds like "Ex-youd", next we have the "ium" part at the end which someone chose to remove from the American word for some bizarre reason.

Given that the following elements end in "ium":

Americium
Actinium
Barium
Berkelium
Beryllium
Bohrium
Cadmium
Calcium
Californium
Cerium
Cesium
Chromium
Copernicium
Curium
Darmstadtium
Dysprosium
Einsteinium
Erbium
Europium
Fermium
Francium
Gadolinium
Gallium
Germanium
Hafnium
Hassium
Helium
Holmium
Iridium
Lawrencium
Magnesium
Meitnerium
Mendelevium
Neodymium
Neptunium
Nobelium
Plutonium
Polonium
Potassium
Praseodymium
Promethium
Protactinium
Radium
Rhenium
Rhodium
Roentgenium
Rubidium
Ruthenium
Rutherfordium
Samarium
Scandium
Seaborgium
Selenium
Strontium
Technetium
Tellurium
Terbium
Thallium
Thorium
Thulium
Titanium
Ununnilium
Vanadium
Ytterbium
Yttrium
Zirconium

So I'm pretty happy with it being "Aluminium"... Why would want rid of the "ium" in that but not in "Americium" is beyond me.

If you are held to that, then I approve this thread.

Good man! I am held to that.

Bloody good questions, and my answer is: I have no idea, I think it's probably a combination of us having a very small country so we can hardly go camping in the outback and it being a cheap holiday where kids get to meet other kids and parents can sit around and do sod all.

But in all honesty I'm with the Top Gear crowd on this one. It makes no sense.

Also, you're right, back when planes were too expensive and caravans are all we had, we took kids on caravan holidays, then the kids grew up and take their kids... now it's a horrible tradition.

The French love their superfluous letters.

Quite true.

Why do British football fans (soccer here) turn into raging idiots when watching games, especially in other countries? Why the lack of class from a society who is supposed to be so prim and proper?

Two reasons:

1) Alcohol.
2) There are morons like that everywhere, in the UK they congregate at football matches, I'm not sure where they pop up in the US of A.

It's a lot better than it used to be though.

Having been a Philly sports fan my entire life and having gone to a bunch of games, this is very true of America as well, just sayin'.
