I'm going there in two weeks, but everywhere I looked online, they charge and arm and a leg for 100megs of internets (about ~$40 per 100 Mbytes).

Every hotel...if they have internet... is doing this. Grrrrr... I'm headed there for a week's worth of vacation before I have to work in the pacific ocean for the next 2-3 months; but having no internets to check for email, send pics to my family of my daily shenanigans, etc, will definitely suck :p

I'll be around Wellington and the northern part of the southern island. If anyone can actually give me tips on what to do around there once I get there, and any assistance on cheap lodging/hostels that'll help too :p

TIA dudes!

You're going to NZ and worried about $40? Try Cancun better pie and cheap.

As for what to do, unfortunately I haven't spent much time in that area. I spent a couple of weekends in Wellington - it's an awesome city and you'll find heaps to do. Check out the museum, pub crawling along the harbor is fun. I've only really driven through the northern South Island so I really don't know what's there. My brother (Gayner) lived in Wellington for a year. He's currently banned but I can ask him for some advice for things to do.

lol not everywhere has 100mbps residential lines. Only china and US as far as I know. And 40 bucks for 100mbps is not all that much. It's 40 bucks/mo for 5mbps here..... and you're lucky if you even get 5mbps.

LMAO how cute. No, it's $40 for 100 megabytes, as in you can download 100mb of data for $40. Of course this is absurdly expensive even compared to NZ residential rates (hotels are a rip off) but internet is generally slow and expensive in NZ. 100mbps lines are unheard of here.

Will you have a car? Will you have a wireless notebook? Problem solved. Surely there are dumb people in New Zealand just like in the US that do not secure their wireless.

But yeah... its a vacation.. I am sure your family can wait a couple of weeks before a facebook status update.

NZ is pretty well set up for backpackers and thus there are plenty of internet-cafe type things. They usually run you $5/hour or something along those lines.

Holy crap what kind of crappy ISP charges per amount of data transfered? That's screwed up.

Internet cafe is pretty cheap, and I think wireless is free any public library.. but I'll have to check that.

Just get a USB modem from Telecom or Vodafone on prepay, and enjoy your holiday rather then sitting on the internet all the time.

Or use internet cafes, there is always an abundance of those.

And I don't know why everyone is saying the internet is slow and exepensive in NZ. When I lived there we had unlimited DSL from Telecom for $59 and not under a contract either. Maybe they've changed the pricing structure? Who knows, that was 5 years ago.
