I have a friend whose husband thinks halloween is evil, unchristian, and doesn't plan on letting his kids celebrate it. My friend and her husband are both just about finished with divinity school in Iowa.

So why do people think this about halloween? I haven't really asked them about it.

Because they believe that Halloween celebrates ghouls and goblins, which are evil and satanic?

I honestly don't know!

Halloween is "All Hallow's Eve" and is a pagen ritual dedicated to the dead and spirits. As such, it is considered 'bad' by Christianity and most other religions. To me it's just a day to dress up and have fun.

No one celebrates goblins and ghouls..
It's a tradition to have fun more than anything now.

Not all of us are lucky to have an extra debauchery event like Mardi Gras (a Christian concession to the previous religious traditions of Catholic Spanish America) or Gasparilla Day (celebrating a pirate of the high seas), so we need Holloween. Seems most of our holidays encompass some remnant of their pagan predecessors.

I'd just say that if I had kids I wouldn't want them out in the streets after dark.... some people do some CRAZY things on Halloween (Like shooting at your car with a paintball gun, yes it really happened) :|

I did think it was kind of ironic when I saw a church sponsoring a Halloween paraphernalia sale.

no one i know rejects it, and i live in the center of the bible belt. Heck, all the children at my church participate in trick or treating dressed as various monsters. Parents and adults participate by dressing up in various costumes and give candy.

I had a friend when I was in elementary school whose parents wouldn't let him celebrate halloween, always thought that was pretty lame.

When i was in middle school two christian kids said i was going to go to hell for trick or treating.

EDIT: Funny thing is that I saw one of them in college recently and he is all goth/punk, its halloween for him everyday now!
