HALF of a watt cpu in socket A? CONFIRMED

the question is: IS IT a skt462? God knows that if more life is pumped to skt462, there will be MANY, MANY happy ppl.

Zebo, I just ordered a Dell with a 2.8 Ghz P4 for $300 for my brother. You can't compete in the low end sector.

What are your specs for $300? Any rebates? Shipping? Tax? Come clean with it. Honestly I've NEVER found Dell cheaper than an equivlent AMD setup...well that's not true, once, but they stiffed me out of $700 in rebates cause they said my wife did'nt teach at a paricipating university.

Anyway here are spec if interested:

-Duron 1.8 to 2250 on default volts (just set bus from 133 to 166 no biggie here)
-ASUS case above
-Sony Black CD burner
-Samsung 80 gig HDD
-512 MB ram
-MSI IGP Nforce2 motherboard with Network, sound, GF4MX graphics,

You know you can build this for less than $300 right?? You're a smart guy I can't believe you never fiqured this out.

Sure I get on 20" LCD deals or anything else with free shipping and no rebates, but as a tweaker nothing dell has can touch BYO at any price point.
 
i love socket A, still use it today with a nice mobile 2600+. it is true that dell cannot beat an amd setup at any pricepoint, but when you add in a legal os that sort of evens things out. i'd still take the diy machine. however, if you take a dell with a ton of stacked cupons, its tough to beat.

i'm curious to see how this chip overclocks hehehe.

Your telling me that a Duron 2250Mhz system will blow away an Intel P4 2800Mhz system ? Bring on the benchmarks pls...would love to see that happening.

That "P4 2800mhz" is likely a Celeron, not a typical P4. Dunno for sure though.

I don't think it would beat a P4 at encoding.
Trust me, Athlon XP/Duron SUCKS at encoding
<-- encoding an XViD to DVD at the moment, slow as hell, bring on dual core I say
(XP 2500+ Barton @ 2100)
 
I *hope* its sktA.

It would be PERFECT for low-end-no-noise computers... and in VERY, VERY mature chipsets.

Zebo, pal, amigo... we all love AMD and all that... but I don't thing an OCed Duron would beat a stock 2.8ghz P4... I am sure Duron is a better deal, but not as performing as a P4... even though, I assume that Dell computer has 40Gb, 256Mb, IEG2 w/8mb buffer...
 
socket 462 was awesome. My maxed-out 2200+ is still chugging along at 2.35ghz. I heard that the geode was going to be socket A but im not positve. Check AMD's website. They should say.

the problem is that very few current mobos will support low enough vcore for it to put out that little heat. i also suspect that if it is that cool, RAM and NB will still use more than that
edit: after rotating and messing with brightness / contrast, i believe that there is an 8 in the socket number, thereby ruling out socket a. anyone else willing to also look?

I tried that. The "8" you saw is the first letter of the word "SOCKET". I referred to my own pictures of socket A motherboard sockets and that's the correct position for the letter "S". However, I can't enhance the picture enough to clearly read the number 🙁

Edit: You're right...that sure does look like an 8. Here's my comparison though: Mystery Socket vs. Abit KR7A-RAID socket & A7N8X Deluxe 2.0

How much did you pay for the OS though Zebo? cant forget that.

Im with you though, anyone that says that dell isnt prorietary anymore hasnt tried to upgrade one. Also i doubt $300 is an everyday deal for a 2.8 p4, the cpu alone still goes for $150+. Lastly the 2.8 p4 i see for their cheap desktops is 533fsb and no HT, so the duron could even come close to it in encoding and prolly spank it at anything else.

I would love to see benchmarks between these two.
 
You can run a mobile Barton at 1.05v and 600MHz or so on a good socket A motherboard, and that will put out 9W or so of heat (according to a proggy I have).
Not quite as impressive, but not bad.
7.5W apparently at 1.05v and 500MHz.

Anyone know if there's a board which will run less than 1.05v - or a BIOS mod for any boards, like the NF&? 😀 (I have an Abit NF& which goes down to 1.1, but undervolts slightly to 1.05v)

Hmm, made me just think that a weak power supply might be a klugde. Might be rather difficult to find a PS so weak that it drops the CPU rail down that low and still maintains enough for anything else though. 😀
 
Gotta hand it to Dell, they can build a million computers better than any of us can.

But most of us can build a few better than Dell ever has!

This low power mystery CPU may change the third world countries!

Not just that, they've pulled a LOT of life from the TBred core. It debuted about what? 3 years ago? And now they're introducing a NEW CPU using the same core? This could be a 5 year CPU core.


 
These are GREAT news. This is the best news I've read for an AMD product. Socket A will be the longest-living plataform ever. I am very glad.
