Was/is there any doubt it wasn't actually being worked on? I always figured that much was more or less obvious. Though maybe "actively" is the key word here.

A few have thrown up their hands in frustration and declared it Vaporware.

The rest of us are just waiting...

The trademark bit means nothing. The rest isn't surprising but how actively anything is getting done is another matter. Just more ridiculousness from the battered wife syndrome gaming community.

Personally I think they're afraid of half-life 3. How could it possibly be good enough for us now without coming with a free hooker and a pound of cocaine? As long as they're holding back, tweaking it and retweaking it, it could be anything. It could be the greatest game ever, and a lot of people will still believe that the greatest game ever is just behind the curtain at valve headquarters. Once it's out the waveform collapses and, good or bad, what is possibly the most anticipated game ever will be a known quantity. No take backs for all time after that point. That's a lot of pressure.

i saw an article yesterday on how Valve's JIRA site was hacked in to (work hours reporting application) and they saw that there are groups working on HL3, Source 2, and L4D3.

well i could add HL3 to my own company JIRA system and that wouldnt mean much isnt it?

why cant this be another joke?

having a group or a jira project doesnt mean its alive and that it has issues and stuff being created :p it could have been dead since 2007 :p

I've always felt it was certainly coming, and I am patient.

In due time, it will come, and it will probably be completely awesome.

The image from Source3 looks nicer than the original but I feel like the art direction got somewhat lost in the translation. Reminds me pretty strongly of the Doctor's house in FC3 with all the vegetation and color contrast, I think a more 'muted' approach would be more appropriate for either Left for Dead or HL.

HL3 being worked on is not news, everybody already knows they're working on it. The question is when is it coming out.

Yeah - as with DNF the longer the delay the more difficult it is to live up to expectations. I would think its probably impossible for them to do so at this point.

Still, Black Mesa eventually came out and was excellent, so there's hope (though I suppose with a free mod expectations are different - maybe Valve should just release HL3 as a freebie! That'll forestall any sense of disappointment!)

To be fair, it's supposed to be a plantation. The original looks like a bank from the 1920s. The Source 2 shot actually looks like a rundown plantation. The art direction is obviously changed, but I'd argue for the better, as the original really doesn't feel like a plantation.

In all fairness, Valve hasn't even announced they were working on HL3. We all know they are, but we have no idea when they started, and more importantly, when they started seriously working on it and not just kicking around ideas and concepts.

To be fair they did announce that they were going to release HL2 Ep3. That's the real DNF here. The problem I have with Gabe down talking HL3 to keep it from becoming one of those vaporwares that eventually get released (DNF and Dakiata) and to lower hype and expectations, is that he completely glosses over the fact that he has announced an HL product and resolution to the cliff hanger of HL2EP2 and is something like 5 years late on delivering that.

We all know that Valve has been at least doing some HL development since HL2EP2 and while we don't know when or how and what size the team is, that HL2EP3 morphed into a full blown game. But it happened and trying to pretend that they have no desire or interest at this time to go back to the HL franchise is an insult to the fans, because they left us hanging telling us don't worry just wait 6 month to a year there will be a resolution. It would also be an insult to them as a story teller. Anyone who cared about their craft would be ashamed to end the story like that if they could avoid it. It's understandable if your Frank Herbert and die before your done. It's less understandable if your J.K. Rowling and you stopped at book 6 because you lost interest in the HP universe.

So while they have never announced HL3 and are pretending to not be developing it, they either A.) stuck in development/story hell (or waiting till Source 2 which may have been in development hell). B.) They are a horrible entertainment company that have no care for the actual products they have created. Valve likes to act like they aren't a bean counter company and I understand not wanting to dilute the brand. But they can't throw away a story mid sentence like that. I refuse to believe that. So as far as I am concern HL3 development start the second HL2EP2 went gold. Which puts it into at least Dakiata territory.

tf2 was something like 8 years in development.

So 5 years is nothing.

Sorry thought it was 5 years (09) but EP2 launched in 07. So almost 7 years now.

TF2 is kind of a funny one. Started out as this BF2 style ultra realistic team combat game and 8 years later it comes out all rushed looking with cartoony art and combat. I originally was pissed when they demoed it about a half year before launch. I think the farther they got into it they found that CS was already filling that niche and started over from scratch as more of an update to the mod.

Yep, I remember seeing the teaser videos in the late 1990s and early 2000s. I think it was around 2002 the leaks dried up and tf2 had been rumored to have been abandoned.

I think 2014 is going to be the year for something big. With the steam box and steam os coming out, why not a new game and new engine?

My personal opinion, I think the steam box will be out just in time for chirstmas, along with hl3 and l4d3.
