Half Life 2: Most Memorable Moment?

Coming out of the tunnels after Ravenholm. I was like, "here goes the perfunctory cave level, sigh." Then after a minute it was over and I was walking towards the morning sunlight onto the tracks. The weird sci-fi music started and I saw the tracer from a sniper rifle take out a zombie. I lob a grenade into the sniper's window and he flys out onto the tracks. HL2 had dozens of great moments like that. GOTY!

ROFL, I did that myself, resorting to a metal stand thing as well until I found one of the sawblades :D

Anyone want to let me know how to get out of Ravenholme? I cannot find the exit anywhere, but I have seen a small dark tunnel that ends in a grate - do I need to go down there or something? I'm getting close to using noclip just to exit this level :|

OK, first, just listen to what the priest says, and typically you go UP, not down (I dont think I ever went down)

Secondly, memorably parts:

The first level (pick that up, throw it away <gets it in the face> ouch ow that hurts!)
Being able to roam around was AMAZING

The crane (smashing the combine soldiers with my crane...HAHA eat it!)

Cutting zombies in half, painting them white (paint it black would have been funnier, while listening to the song) Lighting them on fire (that one in the cage in ravenhold....turn on the gas, then shoot it (screams of pain)

Being able to control antlions, being able to use turrets (pick on up with the grav gun, and walk around with it pointing it at enemies....LOL)

The Uber grav gun...yeah, putting people in that reactor where they move slowly was cool....not being able to jump and having to start the level over to fix that was annoying. Being able to shut Breen up by dismantling the screens in the room.

The "Train" scene in "Our Benefactors" (last level) and seeing the undead people.

Seeing the Gman in odd places

Finally

The ending SUCKED. The last level was too rushed and too easy (the final "boss".....point and click...) Knowing that Alyx probably died....I liked that character...she was attractive, and had some good development.

I liked when the Smoke stack falls in the earlier portion of the game..

"Follow Freeman" is the best part of the game for me.

Half-Life 2 SUCKED!
I downloaded Doom3 and HL2 of my LAN.

Doom3 - awesome, fun to play, joy to watch.

Half-Life2. No variety whatsoever. 6 weapons (or so), 3 types of troopers, like 3 types of robots and 3 types of creatures... BORING! THe graphics are all alike, serisously, i was just waiting for it to end. Game sucked major ass, i dunno what the deal was about it with folks going crazy in US and Europe. Waht i did like is that church-grounds level. Pretty cool, especially with those zombie creatures climbing the pipework. Pretty cool.

But the ending... it just... friggin sucked the most balls one could ever get a chance to see in his life.

The game is seriously called "half-baked2". Thank god i didn't pay a cent for it, cuz i'd be frustrated.

Yeah, and I suppose Doom 3 was just full of variety?

bjc112:

Follow Freeman was alright, though there are gripes about friendlies blocking the way. And those mines were annoying as hell, especially since you really couldn't use them against the Combine. I liked the part were you and your friends were backed up against the wall with that fixed machine gun. I like that sort of massive firing of machine gun sort of thing.

Czar:

Dog was underplayed. He could've been fantastic.

Yeah, I'd say Doom 3 was to fricken repetitive. Enough to say, as a game, in my mind it pulls worst of 2004. In D3 there were a select number of monsters (lets see, fat guy, flaming guy, huge soldiers we see a video being created, elephant thingy, giant things, screaming things, spiders....) They all "beam in" you just know when and where its going to happen b/c it is to predictable. Oh, look, they jumped out of a secret compartment. wow (said in the fashion like the guys says it for Clear Eyes).

HL2 was, for one point, outside. I cant stand games which are only inside (no, those small outside scenes dont count....they lasted 10 seconds) The AI was always the same in D3, commandos dodge you shots, everything else charges you. In HL2, there was at least some variety (except they didn't react to grenades well)

I payed 30 for it, and I don't regret it. Partially due to the fact it has counter strike (if you didnt pay anything squidman, does that mean you don't have a legal CD key, and thus cannot enjoy CS:S?) I also am looking forward to HL2's own multiplayer (slicing people in half with saw blades!)

Ravenholm was memorable, but not my fav.
Dog was awesome, but only eyecandy (darn!)
Alyx was actually attracting (thats a first for a comp game)
Thats partially why I hate the ending....

The game seemed rushed...the first half unfocused, the second half rushed. And the final "boss" was just point and click. But the ending is almost enough to make me hate the game....almost....then I think of using the crane to kill people. HA!

Nah, CS runs just fine, too bad there are but 6 people on the LAN who play it :( 150 others prefer original CS 1.5 (primarily, cuz their PC's are old). I've player CS:S - now that's awesome, but yet again, people play same friggin maps over and over again, its annoying.

I agree that Doom3 was more of a showcase. But what a showcase it was! I loved the graphics. Loved the interactiveness of the screens, and what have you. That heat wobble, the detail of the weapons and monsters. HL2 was annoying mostly because of the simplicity of the textures. Brick-painte wall-asphalt, and so forth, D3 was colour, bump-maps, and friggin realism. But hey, games that are really gonna rock - probably SoF3 or something :) SoF gore and weaponry with D3 engine and physics? Gonna be off the hook.

You've got some odd tastes, but to each man his own. I just can't bring myself to say that Doom III was better than HL2. I agree with you about SoF though; I enjoyed SoF 1 immensely, but I hated SoF2.

"Loved the interactiveness of the screens"

Marathon is a pretty old game. It had interactive screens.

"D3 engine and physics"

Im sorry but, what physics? HL2 is probably the most noticeable use of physics in a game so far, despite the fact that the Havok engine has been around for some time.

My major gripe about HL2: The game, especially after I've played it, had an enormous amount of potential. Valve did an excellent job with HL2; it's a good game, but we are all left feeling that there could have been so much more. Like Dog, there could have been so much more levels with Dog under your control; instead, there were only two brief sequences, only the first of which was interactive to a noticeable level. Ravenholm was a terribly bright spot (not literally), as was the start of the game up to the end of Route Kanal (I'm sorry, but what is everyone's problem with the airboat? That level was great!). HL2 tended to drag at the highway level, simply because you didn't get the same sense of speed you did with the airboat.

About HL2 being open-ended, like Deus Ex. Deus Ex was great, but the highly scripted play of HL2 is expected, as it follows suite with HL1. Now, some may say that's Valve not trying anything new, but I think the 'mystery' (or suckiness, as some may call it) of the HL story makes scripted action almost necessary. I can never imagine HL being an open-ended game with dialogue selection menus.

A great portion of the reason HL2 is good is because HL1 was great.

Still, squidman, if you like Doom 3, I'm sure you'll like Quake 4.

well, lets see, since physics doesnt change on a daily basis, the Havok engine is just fine. Just tell it the properties of an object (coeffcient of static & kinetic friction, volume, mass, effect of gravity, etc.) and it'll run with it.

All they did in HL2 was apply it to EVERYTHING. Thats amazing (gee, say, crushing people with your crane?

Bump maps....all the textures has normal maps, and shadows. The ONLY thing D3 has is shadows. The faces dont look that realistic. They seem to fake, too smooth. Yeah, the shadows are amazing....thats is it. I was afraid HL2 might be the same, amusing while you can walk around without a care, and then "hell" breaks loose. I was mistaken, and happily so!

Now, however, I truly enjoyed the open endedness of games like Deus Ex 1, and DX2 to an even greater extent (turning people in to that hologram for money. Yeah!) Also like DX2 was Theif 3, open ended inbetween missions (I went with the hammers.....can't stand that other faction) yet it was not as "interactable" as HL2. Granted, D3 had the screens thing, but that got old, real fast. One day I may finish it.

Also, telling the story through PDAs is old....anyone here play System Shock 2? Yeah, its old, but still good, lol. It used PDAs, along with the odd computer voice, and the captain of the Rickenbacker (you never talk to someone face to face...you see people running from the monsters, leaving in an escape pod, but never talk to someone face to face. Makes for a creepy game.

If SoF3 is based on the D3 engine, I won't touch it. I have a 6800 Ultra, and I stuggled some with D3. Now the HL2 engine, thats different. I'll be looking for games based on that.

Quick note: to get better faces in HL2, they used a special shader engine to give a better, more real look (and they used bump maps, hence why the faces dont look to "smooth" and fake.)

And yes, Alyx was good looking!!!! (thats a first for a game!)

RampantAndroid:

I was simply stating that the Havok engine had not been implemented to such effected despite the engine's age. I see no argument.

Oh, I'm not trying to start an arguement....sorry if I came across like that. I was just making and observation, although one thing that can be done to the engine is make it 64 bit and such, make it more effcient, that stuff....

The crane was a blast.

Before I knew better, I parked the buggy way out past the tug boat.

When I realized I still needed it, I could not get back to it, without being killed by them sand fleas. LOL.

So, I used the crane to line up the containers, so I could get back to the buggy by walking on the tops of them.

Then, I drove the buggy into one of the containers, lifted it onto the dock, but could not get back into the buggy to drive it out!

It took me a little while to realize that I could lift just the buggy.

I kept thinking there should be more to that crane area........something else needed to be lifted, or moved, etc.

Bah, Doom 3 is officially a joke now. Rendering looks terrific, but when 3/4 of the screen is solid black, it should. To much searching, reading, and listening to PDAs to keep me interested in the experience. If I want mindnumbed shooting, I'll reach for painkiller. The engine is better, and there is less BS. Compared to halflife2, doom 3 runs like ass. Additionally, the game engine no longer feels as tight as it did with Q3. If anyone says halflife2 "sux azzzz", I suspect they are so jaded about the gaming industry and FPS games, they'd be better off trying a different hobby. Halflife 2 looks terrific on crappy machines, it is filled with more "moments" than the last two years worth of single player FPS games combined. The weapons are interesting, varried, and for the most part fairly balanced. The game engine is not as tight as Q3, but it feels as good if not better than the original halflife. The AI needs work. Game crashes far too often...steam is an unnecessary pain in the ass.

The ending may have been dissapointing, but the game was long and rewarding (again, something I can't say about halo2, which seems to be thrown about as it's peer)--Of course, I think the ending hate is a little over blown. It would have been nice had the game answered more overall questions, but if you consider the shadowy nature of who gordon is now, I think the ending makes sense--it didn't even strike me as that much of a cliff hanger. Don't be surprised when the sequel takes off years after the events in hl2.

As far as moments, there are too many to define just one. The airboat sequence was the best vehicle moment in any FPS ever. If I had to name one, I'd probably say the moment when I first picked up a sawblade and halved a zombie in ravenholme with my shiney new gravgun. Other contenders would be chucking a grenade into a window above me, watching the remaining windows blow out and a combine soldier ragdoll out the window. Also, the nervewracking moment when combine-barney runs you down at the beginning of the game. Great stuff.

Well, if your sig is correct, how in the hell do you struggle on Doom3 with an FX-53 and a 6800 Ultra? I run a A64 3200+ @ 2.47GHz with a 6800GT, and I have no problems whatsoever at 16x12. You have a top of the line system, do not let me hear you spew forth lies again.

Anyhow, most memorable moment? None really. Just a great game, through and through. And what's with the obsession over Dog? This "character" wasn't that great or exciting. If some of you got your wish to fight alongside him through a portion of the game, how would that work exactly? Dog killing everything while you stand back and watch?

what you may call top of the line, isn't so much so...for one, I had a bad power supply (not good news with the 6800U)

Secondly, there seems to be a glitch with some of the 6800Us out there, and I got one....I only struggled when the elevator doors would open and something would charge you immediatly, then, if it didn't lock up, I'd be fine.

ive just gotten the gravity gun; but the most memorable part is the very beginning where you're being chased by the combine soldiers and you haven't gotten your suit yet....running outside on ledges of buildings with bullets flying past your head after you rush through a shabby apartment building gave a good initial rush to it i thought.
