well, lets see, since physics doesnt change on a daily basis, the Havok engine is just fine. Just tell it the properties of an object (coeffcient of static & kinetic friction, volume, mass, effect of gravity, etc.) and it'll run with it.
All they did in HL2 was apply it to EVERYTHING. Thats amazing (gee, say, crushing people with your crane?
Bump maps....all the textures has normal maps, and shadows. The ONLY thing D3 has is shadows. The faces dont look that realistic. They seem to fake, too smooth. Yeah, the shadows are amazing....thats is it. I was afraid HL2 might be the same, amusing while you can walk around without a care, and then "hell" breaks loose. I was mistaken, and happily so!
Now, however, I truly enjoyed the open endedness of games like Deus Ex 1, and DX2 to an even greater extent (turning people in to that hologram for money. Yeah!) Also like DX2 was Theif 3, open ended inbetween missions (I went with the hammers.....can't stand that other faction) yet it was not as "interactable" as HL2. Granted, D3 had the screens thing, but that got old, real fast. One day I may finish it.
Also, telling the story through PDAs is old....anyone here play System Shock 2? Yeah, its old, but still good, lol. It used PDAs, along with the odd computer voice, and the captain of the Rickenbacker (you never talk to someone face to face...you see people running from the monsters, leaving in an escape pod, but never talk to someone face to face. Makes for a creepy game.
If SoF3 is based on the D3 engine, I won't touch it. I have a 6800 Ultra, and I stuggled some with D3. Now the HL2 engine, thats different. I'll be looking for games based on that.
