Half-Life 2 lost coast video stress test

i did a forum search and nothing came up for it, so i hope this isn't a repost. anyways i tried it out and scored 87fps with a 6800gt 420/1100 with no aa/af at 1280x1024 HQ setting in NV control panel. game details set to High/no HDR.

The test seems borked. I tested at the following settings:

1280x1024 0AA/0AF HQ no HDR

Results - 107fps

1680x1050 4AA/8AF HP Full HDR

Results - 106.7fps

1920x1200 4AA/8AF HQ Full HDR

Results - 95fps

It doesn't look like it's working right to me.

I thought lost coast was designed to use the fancy new technology like HDR. I'd figure turning it off isn't running the way it was meant to be run.

I got 53fps or so at 1680x1050, 2xAA/8xAF I think (HDR on). 6800GT wasn't overclocked at the time.

Edit: Might have been no AA, I forget.

I dunno, HL2 is pretty CPU bound...plus you're sporting 2x7800GTs. Doesn't seem too far fetched to me.

i think partial of the hdr was off (the one where you enter dark places, it gets brighter...), to gorcorps, loast coast was designed to show off what the source engine is capable of, that includes HDR and the larger amount of textures they used.

True, but even a pair of 7800GTs should get hammered at 1920x1200 4AA/8AF w/ HDR on. Seems like gameplay is much choppier than the stress test but maybe that's because there's actual enemies.

I'd say the test is of limited relevance as there will probably never be an actual game using this type of "HDR".

Knowing how your rig scores on 1 short level of HL2 and 4 levels of DoD is sort of useless.

What makes you think this Rollo, if I may ask?

4xAA/8xAF, Reflect All, all other settings maxed@1280x1024-87FPS.

Because I think Valve's way of doing it is harder to implement than FP16 HDR.

yeah valve worked pretty hard trying out different techniques......i think this one is the best compromise between HDR quality, speed, and IQ.

FC HDR was particularly good outdoors, but for the most part the FPS werent fantastic, and you couldnt use AA.

There are plenty of people who play Dod:S and CS:S. Considering that HDR is now avaliable to map makers and both of these "games" then I say it's far from useless. Not to mention valve(or turtle rock) would only need to take 5 minutes worth of editing and do a recompile on their maps to have functional HDR in any of their CS:S maps.

yes but you have to remember that most CS players dont have uber hardware. i know valve have done an awesome job with source and its very very playable on a wide range of machines but i can see alot of CS players simply turning HDR off in persuit of better FPS. afterall FPS counts in games like CS.

i know my bro's getting on fine with my old 9500pro (awesome awesome card) but i think throwing HDR into the mix would just ruin it.

at my uni we play CS:S together at the little LANs we hold....out of 50people im the only one with SLI. and 4 others have something 6800 or better. the rest play with older hardware ..9600's, Ti4200's, alot of GF2 and GF4 MX's,

HDR's a neat feature for sure.....but too few people are able to take advantage of it.

X1800 XT stock clock
AMD64 @ 1790MHz

2048x1536 resolution 6xAA/16xAF Reflect "ALL", HDR set to "Full", all other in-game settings on Highest level, vsinc disabled. Catalyst drivers set to highest Quality Settings with High Quality AF and Adaptive AA enabled.

Results 33.238342 fps

Doesn't "Day Of Defeat: Source" use this type of HDR???

Silly SickBeast...DOD:S is no "game" LOL.

Is this an update for Lost Coast or something? Because I dont remember there being any stress test options when I originally played it.

no HDR is the lost coast stress test 🙁
either the stress test is screwed up, or valve turned it off for the stress test

and... valve's HDR is now built into the Source engine, along with a few other effects they are testing for improved visuals that dont eat up processing power.
FP16 isn't truely supported yet in mass. nvidia's chips dont support it with AA at the same time, so to me, its not worth it. ATi's does, but at a massive performance hit.
Valve's on the other hand, looks awesome, and doesn't tax the system horribly and can still use AA.
looking forward to Aftermath and future expansions. They will be using Source's HDR. 🙂
