Hair Loss

So my hair didn't really grow back as fully as it normally does after this summers cut. Not balding, but some serious thinning.

Does anyone have any experience with any shampoos/gels/creams/pills/treatments that have helped in this area?

I am too young for this 🙁

Au naturel, you can massage your scalp and exercise it too (move muscles up there until tired). This is suppose to better distribute nutrients by improving blood flow.

The drugs/creams are hit and miss. In addition, they can mess-u-up in some weird way.

Otherwise, just accept it. You'll just stress yourself out more by worrying. I have...

There really are only two FDA-approved treatments for hairloss: finasteride (propecia/proscar) and minoxidil (rogaine). I put the brand names in parenthesis because you can buy off-brand generics for cheaper. The finasteride is used to block the hormone responsible for hairloss, and the minoxidil is responsible for regrowing new hair. Taking minoxidil by itself is probably not a good idea, as you aren't doing anything to prevent the hair from falling out in the first place. Also, not everyone responds to these two drugs.

You will need a prescription for propecia from your doctor, but first try asking for proscar. It's the exact same drug, but comes in a 5mg pill instead of a 1mg pill. You can cut the 5mg pill into 4ths and take a quarter of a pill each day. Additionally, they now make a generic version of proscar that is much cheaper than propecia, especially if you cut the pills into quarters. Having said that, not every doctor will prescribe proscar for hairloss. You might have to see more than one doctor to find one who will do it.

Rogaine now comes in liquid and foams. I have not tried the foam, but the liquid can cause your scalp to dry out and flake. It can also make your hair greasy. For those reasons, I would try the foam first, but it is quite a bit more expensive beacause you must buy the name brand version of it.

I've been dumping Minoxidil on my head for about 8 years, now. The 2% didn't do much for me, so I went to the 5% solution when it came out. I saw pretty decent results for a few years, then I married a cosmetologist that insisted that various forms of witchcraft (I can't believe the crap they tell them in cosmetology school) would work just as well. After arguing for about six months about it, I agreed to dump the Minoxidil and try the crap that she wanted for 90 days..... result....... my hair fell out. We're divorced, but she still feels guilty for it. Anyway, when I got back on he Rogaine, it slowed/stopped the hair loss, but I wasn't getting anything back anymore. Started taking Propecia (generic, actually) last winter and I saw good results, really fast when using both. I didn't grow boobs or see a decrease in libido like they warn, either. I haven't tried the Propecia without the Minoxidil, either. I would suggest just the Minoxidil for now and if/when that stops working add Propecia to the mix. The only real downside (other than cost) is that the Rogaine will turn everything yellow/orange over time, i.e. white hats, pillows, etc. and that after using it for a few weeks, my scalp gets itchy, irritated, developing zits now and then. I just lay off it for a week or so and it seems to work ok. Good luck.
