I believe it loses 50% of it's value, no?

After a brief inspection, the manager offered $8500 for my 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue. KBB wholesale value was around $3500-$4000! I had to suppress my laughter as the sale was finalized. What made it sweeter was the manager had been an ass. I guess he was the 'bad guy' and my salesman was the good guy.
2005 Mazda Trbute V6, 2WD, auto, leather, moonroof, fancy pants stereo and rear view mirror, side-curtain windbags
$21300-($8500 trade-in)=$12500+TTL
Gonna really miss my badass Olds.
The $21K was after the rebates. MSRP was $27K, and I did finance through MAC to get all the rebates. The APR was a ridiculous 8%, but I'm going to pay it off immediately, and there's no prepayment penalty. That APR is truly ridiculous because my credit score was >800. Even if I don't pay off the loan, the total interest compared to a 5% APR over 36 months for the small principal is only a few hundred dollars, so getting the $1000 MAC rebate was a better deal.Originally posted by: QuitBanningMe

Still a good deal though but you didn't get over on them........
Yes. He bought the car at invoice.
His trade could be worth as much as $5500.
There is a 3K rebate on the Tribute.
Add that to the trade = $8500 for the trade.
If he financed through Mazda there is another 1K rebate = some profit.
If he didn't they keep the hold back and sold a car.++

No! This is a myth. A car is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Only an idiot would not be willing to pay more than 50% of the cost of a car that's just been driven off the lot. A car takes several years to lose 50% of its value. Yes, in most cases there's a big hit right off the bat because people ARE willing to pay quite a bit more for a brand new car than one with a couple hundred miles on it (you wonder why the person is selling it so fast). But how much you lose "when you drive it off the lot" is irrelevant because nobody drives a car off the lot and immediately sells it...
Anyway... no, not 50%.
AAAAHHHH....they sold the car at invoice and still profited. What don't you understand about this?Originally posted by: Mermaidman

Here are the numbers again so you will understand:
MSRP $27,110
Invoice (from Edmunds.com)=$25,300
My pre-trade in price=$21,100
Trade-in=(-$8,500) Should have been $3,500 to $4,500
Prior to the trade-in, the price was 'fair,' but by overvaluing my car, the dealer made it a great deal! It's like getting another $4000 discount. If someone else can get a similar Mazda for less than my de facto price of $17,000, more power to him.

Thing is, regardless of how good a deal the guy COULD have gotten, the dealer still "pwned" himself by offering so much over the real trade-in value of the car, because obviously Mermaidman would have taken $4500 for his car AND paid what he paid for the truck. The dealer IS out $4000 that he COULD have had if he didn't offer such a high trade-in value.

Hehe.. you don't want to know this but the MSRP on the most expensive FWD version of the Tribute is only suppose to be $26K and invoice is suppose to be $24K. With the $3K rebate on the Tribute, that brings the price down to $21K invoice.
Right now EVERYONE get's the X-Plan pricing for invoice on all ford cars with certain exclusions like the Mustang GTs for example. Mazda is a subsidary of Ford and as thus Mazda cars are apart of this pricing plan.
Now, all Ford cars have a MINIMUM hold back of 5% based off the MSRP. Also, the Mazda Tribute has a factory to dealer incentive of $1400 for any lot to sell 30 or more cars of ANY MAZDA per month. That's a retroactive rebate offered by Mazda to the dealers. This also varies dealer per dealer as some dealers may get offered more or less on the factory to dealer incentives and some lots may or may not hit their sells goals/quotas to received that.
What this means? Selling you that car at $21K makes the dealership around... $2750 on average.
As for your trade in, that car they probably already had someone looking for it which is why they were willing to offer more for your trade in. Chances are, they know a little ued dealer ship willing to pay $10K for that car for odd reason.
When you factor in they are getting more on the backend through financing you at 8% where as my bank offers 3.5% APR financing for me.. it's not that big a deal for you UNLESS you can really pay that car off in a year or less.
So guess what? you got an OK deal. Nothing special, nothing great. If you got $2K UNDER invoice, that would have been a GREAT deal. But most people can't haggle like that.
Let me put it this way, I'm about to pick up my brand new FULLY LOADED Mazda RX8, MSRP $34K for $24,900 + TLL. I'm paying almost $3K UNDER invoice. That's without a trade in and financing through my bank on a brand new '05.
There's a difference in skils my friend![]()

Invoice (from edmunds) shows to be $21,500 after the $2,500 discount (not $3K).
Edmunds invoice.
I think it saves some session info, so plug in the options (opt. pack2 looks close to the OPs description), the zip, and the color.
edit: so he bought the Tribute at invoice-rebate+3K over on his trade in. I'm betting the dealer was *thinking* they were pulling the "add rebate to trade-in" deal, but screwed themselves by applying that rebate to the trade-in as well as the new car.

Also there is hidden money at play like hold back and the fact that his trade was probably sold before the deal was made. Yes he got a great deal. The dealer however did not lose money on this.

I got my mazda3 for 16.7k AFTER TTL, and the msrp was 20k, invoice, 17
That took a lot of work, end of the month, and pissing the sales guys off no trade in
