Wilmington Eye Associates - Dr. Stratas

Intralase is bladeless LASIK with a program (CustomVue) that customized the LASIK procedure according to each eye's differences.

The actual laser surgery took place around 4pm EST.

The actual time for each eye was 24 seconds right and 23 seconds left which consisted of 285+ laser pulses each eye within that time.

Completely awake and aware the entire time of the preocedure. The only part that was uncomfortable was when my eye underwent a suction aperatus in order to cut the flap with the laser. It is of course obviously easy to deal with, just somewhat uncomfortable Definetely a weird experience.

As soon as I was leaned forward on the operating table, I was allowed to open my eyes - I could immediately tell a difference! I was actually able to see.

My vision at this moment is hazy/cloudy. I've already begun my eye drop routine that consists of three differnt types of drops....1 is an inflamatory, another is an antibacterial, and the last is a lubricant/moisturizer.

I have post-op tomorrow at 11:15am EST.

I am now able to see without contacts or glasses!!!!!!!!!

I'll keep my avatar with glasses for the good ol' times! lol

UPDATE 3/23/08:

My eare doing great since the first procedure.

However, as in my posts since the first procedure, i complained of dim light and night time vision blurriness. Things in low light and night were out of focus and in broad daylight my vision was good, however, I still experienced vision that was slightly out of focus at times. Very tolerable, just annoying.

I had my second LASIK procedure on 3/13/08, about a week ago. The second procedure was otherwise known as an "enhancement".

Procedure process was the same as the first except that the flap was not cut with a laser this time. The dotor simply "re-lifted" the flap with a small metal cutting tool - no not a microkeratome but like a small blade and hook of some sort. It was pretty weird how easy it was for him to re-lift the flap! The doctor described it like velcro and he just had to undo the velcro...

Treatment time per eye this time was only around 5 seconds.

I went home later that day and took a nap. i woke up 4.5 hours later. I walked outside in broad daylight and i was astonished at how clear, focused, and crisp my vision was! I was very excited! Later that night, i went out to drive to see how my vision was...again, I was astonished at how clear and crisp everything was!

On 3/14/08 at 8:30am I had my post op. I was able to read a few letters from the 20/10 line that morning.

Been using the medicated drops as directed. My eyes are not dry at all, this is a problem for most LASIK patients.

My night vision has been corrected and my vision as never been more crisp and clear than it is right now.

I do not regret LASIK whatsoever!

my vision during the procedure was lost at times...the eyes are forced open and you cannot blink and with the lasers beaming into the eye, vision is lost temporarily which is normal. My doctor even told me when my vision would be lost....

My vision before the provedure was -4.5 in both eyes with astigmatism in both eyes...

My eyes after 100% healing over the next week or two should be 20/15 according to the doctor.

Ehh. Not that bad. I have -5.50 with astigmatism. I'm hoping to get laser someday..

 Had it done couple years ago, still going strong. I had the flap procedure, and it only took about 24 hours to recover to 20/20.

ALL LASIK procedures require a flap.

Intralase uses a laser to create the flap instead of a mechanical blade....

Me too.. I'm still debating and right now my growth in that area isn't quite done so I'll problably wait it out another 5 years before making a decision.

I had mine done back in January of this year. So far so good. I still see halos/starbursts, but it isn't intolerable. I still have a good amount of dryness, but the doc says it will most likely take a year before I see some change in that regard. I think by now, all the preservative free drops I've purchased have come close to the cost I paid for the surgery itself :Q Hope the outcome ends up working out well for you, OP.

I was -5.25 with slight astigmatism before the surgery.

Good message board for the OP (and anyone else thinking of/had Lasik)

Thinking about getting this done too. If you dont mind answering - please let us know what the cost was.

Please keep this alive and report in a couple of weeks how your sight is and if you have any issues or anything.

Hi.

Cost of the Intralase (bladeless) along with the LASIK and CustomVue procedures, the total cost was $6000.

I am a Blue Cross Blue Shield member so I was given a 20% discount - $4800.

When paying with a check or cash, they give another $200 discount - $4600

My cost was $4600.

do not be scared!

I was not scared or nervous at all whatsoever about gettng the procedure done. Had no second thoughts and was 100% ready.

The doctor that did my procedure (Dr. Stratas) was the first in my state to be certified for LASIK (1995) and he was the first to be certified for Intralase (over 3 years ago). The LASIK Center has done over 1million LASIK surgeries! I hd 100% complete confidence in this guy.

You will never be required to touch your eyes, though the doctor and the assistants will have to touch your eyes during exams and preoperation....all of this is of course done with your eyes completely numb from numbing drops.

for axample, the doctor actually takes a special felt tip marker and draws on my eyes before the actual LASIK takes place..very interesting.

I had the blade flap as well. Six years out and I'm still 20/15 in my right eye. My doctor insists that the blade is actually better than the laser. . .

I keep reading how if you're nearsighted, you may need reading glasses/etc for reading, computer work/etc...heh, I can't read a computer monitor (or a book, for that matter, unless it's practically plastered to my face) without glasses anyway...

I had mine done in April this year - I have minimal dryness now (very minimal unless I sleep with my eyes open.) I'm also 15/20 with no halo's or stars when looking at lights, and I was almost 15/20 the week after surgery - it's really trippy during surgery, you sit down "blind" and all of a sudden you can see the clock when you sit up. The first few days are a bitch, sleeping with the covers, and making sure you get the drops - and they ITCH like someone scratched them.

But, overall, it's VERY worth it.

My total cost was $4300, no tax.

Cool!

I'm glad that it has continued to work out for you!

My vision is getting better by the hour it seems....I'm staying in a dark room though with only the TV on and my monitor.

I have this face shield that i have to wear to prevent me from rubbing my eyes..I'll use it for the next 2-3 days.

The drops haven't bothered me really. I have to use them for several weeks.

VERY WORTH IT INDEED!

Congrats on your new eyes!

Had PRK done a month ago...definitely the manly way to get your eyes done. Instead of feeling ready to go back to work in 24hrs with Lasik, it takes a week. Plus, you really suck it up the first few days.

Before: 20/400
Now: R 20/30 L 20/50

Full potential should be reached within 6mos.

The procedure keeps improving, so the longer you can hold off, the better. Later methods are unlikely to correct for flaws introduced by the earlier. Satisfaction % keeps going up while catastrophic failure rates are going down.

Just arrived back from my post-op check up.

My vision is 20/15 right now with still a little hazziness in my vision. The hazziness will eventually dissapear over the following week.

It's wonderful not having to worry about glasses or contacts!

Procedures are of course continuing to improve as technology improves. But as of right now, the technology is there to get the best vision possible if you go to the right place.

The LASIK Center here in Wilmington (and several other locations) use different systems to get a complete 3D view of the eye and map both lower and higher order abberations.

The CustomVue technology using WaveScan during the LASIK procedure corrects for higher level abberations as most other LASIK procedures do not correct for them...it's a huge difference.

I think anyone going into this surgery needs to have realistic expectations. One person may have 20/15, another may still need glasses. Everyone's mileage may vary in terms of results.

I had it done back in 2003.

Before it I had -5.75 in my left eye and -6.0 in my right. I was basically blind without contact/glasses.

I now have 20/20 vision.

It was hands down the best money I've ever spent thus far.

What happens if you look elsewhere when the laser is pulsing to do whatever it is doing?

Cheers for the info.
