This is a good holdover until the devs wrap things up and I do a full-on, finished guide :)

Wish that listed the quirks; I'd jump in with the sound dongle if firewire/networking/usb etc were all good

From my own experience, I can tell you that the USB seems fine, tested with ext HD, mouse, kb, flash drives and printer. Firewire I have not tried, don't really have any devices it uses. Ethernet works, but no bonjour. This seems to be quite common with 10.6 and there is a fix available which I have used on my DS3L system. It works fine there and I see no reason why it would not work on the UD3P as well. On board sound works and the video from my 8400 GS seems to work okay, QE/CI all monitor resolutions. HTH

Is there a similar guide for D3SL? I have that and an 8600 GT. Offboard FW Audio (Miglia Harmony Audio) and I don't need/use bonjour. Do use sleep though.

I've seen several guides for the DS3L, but none as easy as the LifeHacker guide. I did my own cut and paste type install and it seems to work okay, but I'm not ready to write any guides myself. Google DS3L and 10.6 or Snow Leopard and see what you get.

i think the black osx is pretty easy. Works almost perfect on ds3l. The lifehacker works really well too. Dont remember if sleep worked with the lifehacker though. Does with black osx though, just not by itself after set time. You have to click apple then sleep, but it works great. http://www.insanelymac.com/for...hp?showtopic=%20180954 here is black osx 100% vanilla install. Gotta make your own dsdt, but its painless if you follow directions.

on another note can i ask how you guys manage your windows. Is it mostly with expose? Or clicking the bar? I find when i have more than 8 or so windows open it takes a while to find my window with expose.

Here's a seriously important question:

Is it "key-POE-ex" (like how I say it in my head) or "KEY-pox"?

Just wunderin'.

It's supposed to be KeypOSx. He wasn't a convert at the time though.

lol, yeah what happen was. I think, I had a anandtech account before as keypo and forgot both the password and the email that went with it. And for some crazy reason someone else had keypo user name in BF2 so my bf2 was xxxkeypoxxx. So I used keypox. So yeah key-POE-ex

Or was it a typo where i missed the o and hit a p instead. keyosx.

But Im serious about the window management, I feel like im missing something.

And I finally got my sleep to function correctly, for P35 users. (Not forcefully removing usb devices now) With the op here http://www.insanelymac.com/for...x.php?showtopic=168014, and with another post in the same thread with 2 more small changes http://www.insanelymac.com/for...014&st=140&p=1247462&# post #152, for snow leopard.

I tried the lifehacker procedure on my Q6600 machine. Very easy and GUI. Built in NIC works as well as audio. I do get the UUID 35 error though, So it is close!

i think so, but not sure. I have read that people have used older dsdts with newer bios. Though before you make your dsdt, upgrade bios. So you dont have to worry about that.

Can someone tell me how to clone my partition so i can change hard drives? I want to clone this snow leopard install, and move it to another HD. I wanna clone this partition to another partition on the same hd. And then partition new hd differently.

CCC or time machine?

I've used both CCC and SuperDuper to clone SL HD's. And if you are using Chameleon v2 rc3 on the root HD, then nothing else needs to be done after the drive is cloned. I believe this also works if Chameleon v2 rc1 plus PC EFI v10 was used as in the LifeHacker guide. At least it has worked that way for me, I guess YMMV as always.

Progress to report in my quest for 3 displays in Snow Leopard on my UD3P. I now have an install with said displays, plus sound. So video working, network working w/bonjour via the fix, sound working, sleep ???. Also I do have one slight problem I've yet to figure out. If I need to restart, I have to shutdown and then restart the computer as I get the dreaded "You need to restart" error message if I just use restart. Once I figure that one out I will be a happy camper. :D

Update: I removed kext from the /E/E folder one at a time in an effort to find out what was causing the restart problem and removed all except the PlatformUUID.kext. Without it the clock just spins and spins and doesn't go anywhere. Then I removed the smbios.plist from the /Extra folder and it still booted with 3 displays and sound. But when I removed the com.apple.Boot.plist, I lost my 3rd display and sound. But I no longer had the restart problem. Here is a copy of the file, how can such a small thing as this be why my system acts the way it does?

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://

I had an Adaptec model iirc, and it worked fine.

Do you happen to have it nearby? If so if you could check what model it is I would really appreciate it. I'll go nuts if I buy another firewire card and have it not work!

Can anybody explain what this error means, it happens at reboot/shutdown in verbose:

Failed to unmount /home (45)
Failed to unmount /net (45)

My hack does actually reboot/shutdown fine, but I want to know if the above is serious or not?

Thanks in advance.

show package contents of silverlight.pkg. Contents>Resources> Delete Installation Check.

That did it for me.

I got by that okay, but I get the DRM error when trying to watch a movie on 2 out of 3 of my Hacks. One is because of Snow Leopard I'm sure, but the other one I have no idea of why this is happening.

Actually, I fixed the DRM problem with my SMBIOS.plist. Told my Hack it was a Mac Pro. It was happy to lie to Netflix. :)

Details please? I have very little experience altering such things. The one I would like to get it working with is running 10.5.8. I have a local friend who has the same system (GA-945GCMX-S2) and he would love to get Netflix going on it again. He had it back when he was running a Kalyway distro, but it stopped working when he went to a retail install.

Here is a weird problem I am having with my DS3L.. I am trying to charge my primary boot drive in the BIOS and cannot do so because my keyboard does not have a number pad. For some reason the - and + on the regular keyboard do not work.. Is there any way around this?
