[H] Powercooler DEVIL13 HD7990 review

Looks like CFX microstutter is still a big issue. Though it typically beat the 680 SLI solution by measured fps (by a tiny margin, other than OC'ed in sleeping dogs), they had this to say yet again.

One thing we definitely need to bring up, as we usually do in CrossFireX versus SLI evaluations is the overall smoothness from both camps when playing games. We have said in the past that SLI simply feels smoother than dual card CrossFireX, and it is, while gaming. When you ramp up the displays the effect seems to be exaggerated and is really noticed and comparable between three screens. We still felt that the GALAXY GTX 680 GC SLI setup was overall smoother while we were gaming. We were also able to tolerate lesser framerates with this solution and still have that smoothness. Whilst, on the PowerColor DEVIL13 it operated and felt just like any other dual-card CrossFireX solution we've tested in the past in Eyefinity. It had the same amount of jittery/choppy feeling overall. The only way to compensate for that is to aim for higher framerates, which makes that feeling diminish. We felt that the DEVIL13 wasn't any better or worse than a separate dual-card CrossFireX solution in this area, it was exactly the same. We know NVIDIA employs some sort of programming that makes SLI feel smoother as you play games, and AMD CrossFireX could certainly benefit from such a technology.

The best you could do is quote the negative that we already knew from previous reviews.

What i don't know without reading the review is what resolutions, settings and games were tested and the good points, that's the new info that i would be going to look for.

I think your post is exactly what AnandThenMan was talking about.

I either just post the link or add a citation from the introduction or at least balanced parts from conclusion so to not add any personally influenced selectively skewed preconceptions before people read it.
There are times however that the negative is very important to highlight because safety and generally unacceptable performance which is not down to a matter of personal opinion, like say for PSU that only reached 75% of its rating before flacking out and taking other components with it.

So yes the way you have presented it, its a reviews about smoothness and like the specific card and everything else is irreverent.

When there are overarching issues that compromise the entire product, that is the most important part of the review. It could get 100 fps in the most demanding game in the world at quad monitor resolutions, but if those first 99 frames happen in 1ms each, and that last frame happens in 900ms, the fps number is meaningless.

That's exactly what happens with CFX, taken to a ridiculous extreme to illustrate why fps values alone aren't a good measure of the suitability for a card. You have to know the variation in frametime as well.

That is your personal opinion to which is the most important part which seems not to be backup with personal experience, as far as im concerned its for the individual to decide.
If it was a Frame time review than your quote would be right on the money.

Maybe if the fuel economy of cars is the most important factor to me i should go around Automotive forums making threads of new car reviews and only quoting and lighting the fuel economy parts of reviews seeing that's all that matters to me personally and add my view of each being or not being worthy based of that.

Yes, it's my opinion that how well it plays games is the most important part of a video card.

Apparently your opinion is that the most important part is how high it can make an FPS meter go, regardless of how it looks to the naked eye. 🙄

Fuel economy of cars is a poor comparison. Microstuttering impedes basic operation, i.e. displaying graphics at smooth framerates. It's like if your car were to apply the brakes on it's own every other moment. Wouldn't be a fun ride that way...

Don,t go putting words to my mouth, i have already said that im a Vsync user on this forum, so high fps i could not give a damn about personally.

I don't see why I can't put words in your mouth when you're attacking *me* for what [H] said and how this card (and all of CFX) performs.

That's totally not my fault.

Which is still all down to individual perception and like and dislikes and what is the greater importance to them and how they use it individually.

You can not put words into peoples mouth period, even more so when the person has already stated otherwise to what your trying to put in and no that is not all what [H] said about the card.

So every time you consider your being attacked you will make something up about the person attacking you in defence because you don't have anything factual.

And another fact, no not all of CFX perform the same and that card has the added issue of the powertune throttling making it even more irregular with smoothness.

Its like an old wooden roller coaster vs a steel one.

You sure are seeming to take CFX performance personally.

It's hardware. Don't take it as a reflection on yourself if it performs badly.

Everyone who gets bent out of shape at negative comments about their messianic hardware needs to give this a thorough read. http://arstechnica.com/science/2011...m-of-favorite-brands-as-threat-to-self-image/

Again another poor attempt on your part to cover the fact of your ill informed over generalisation of CF when the fact you make so much effort to bring it up means you should take your own advice.

I think Final8ty has lost it. He is trying to tell the OP what he can and cannot post about after linking to a review. Is this real life? I thought for sure this was an open forum...

Likes? Who likes stuttering? It's a valid complaint and it must be mentioned. What people make of it, is their own decision. It's not like [H] is saying "don't buy that, it's crap" - they are mentioning a flaw in the tech that may be important to some.

No im not as i posted the same myself when i was asked about the Micro stuttering to a review thread i posted here just recently. i then quoted that part.
But saying that if we all just went around high lighting and just focusing on quoting negative aspects of reviews when making threads this forum would descend very quickly as not the place to read.

I fully agree as i didn't say it should not be mentioned and i have no issue with what [H] said.

Who likes heat and noise also, but who im i to say which aspect is the most important to others and quote just those parts in the OP to others hence why i keep my personal view out of the OP when i post, but that's just me.

why should I? if every NV thread gets the mention of "192" bit bus of 660Ti, the n GHz overclock-ability of 7XXX cards I think I'm right at home.

Topic of and mention of sets things off in a completely different premise, people know what the thread is about before even entering.
Only one narrow aspect of the review about the card has been talked about because the OP chose to make it so when the review was about every aspect.

After all the herp derp in here.. what exactly has changed?

IF YOU NOTICE MS AND IT BOTHERS YOU, AVOID CF. DUH.

Or, alternately, you can just download radeon pro and have MS-free gameplay. Higher performance, no stutter, for cheaper.
