Great article. Looks like AA is not as big a deal. So hopefully people can run higher res and it still look great. I assume my 6800nu should be able to run 1280x1024 No AA and look damn good. Hurry up Aug 3.

I can't believe this engine, I will be able to play at 1600x1200 with 8AF and stay above 50fps average.

Does anyone else think they will piss their pants while playing this game?

Crygens blind-siding me on farcry already got me jumpy.

D3 will be worse......I love it!

Interesting test was the diff between 9800 XT and 6800nu. Seems the 6800 nu will play

Resolution: 1280x1024
Texture Quality: High Quality
No AA / 8XAF
with 57 fps average.

9800xt 256 will play

Resolution: 1024x768
Texture Quality: High Quality
No AA / 8XAF
with 47 fps.

So there is a pretty sizeable difference between the two cards even though the 6800nu has half the memory.

On the XP3200+ system, I notice that the recommended setting for both the 9800XT 256MB and 9800Pro 128MB is the same (1024x768 with High IQ, 8X AF), and the average FPS score difference is only 50.4 vs 47.3. Looks like my 9800Pro 128 o/c to XT speeds should do pretty well!

Well, I'm pleasently surprised to see them say a 9800pro w/128MB can play at *high* at 10 X 7. I was expecting it to be *medium* because of having only 128MB of vid ram. Plus the rig only had 512MB of main memory. I was expecting 1gig to be neccessary.

Well, will actually know soon enough.

Yeah probably the 350 core just not being able to push out enough FPS.

Put it this way, I think there will be a run on adult undergarment protection  I may intentionally hold off playting till halloween just for the horror movie effect. Yeah, I'm old and don't go out partying that night :) I'll take the little man on his candy run then plan on sh*tting myself with D3.

Vanilla 6800 w/ High Quality

I'm impressed with regular 6800's potential. According to this page it can do 1600x1200 at High Quality setting. That's right up there with GT and Ultra. Considering it has only 128MB of on-board RAM, I understand why Kyle called it a "Beast".

I may get a 6800 for my brother so he can't annoy me when I play Doom 3. :) (I already have a GT - not installed yet though)

My current 9800Pro can only do 1024x768 at Medium Quality. :(

lop

Edit: So, there is no card currently able to do "Ultra Quality"?
Edit2: Nevermind, I found it towards the end of the article, section "Ultimate Doom 3 Rig."

It does hold its own suprisingly well, especially on that platform.

Yeah, now hopefully the peeps trash talking about how the 9800XT is better for this title will STFU. At least till ATi prvides the performance increase for D3 they are promoting.

Heck, it does better than X800pro, and is nearly equal to the X800XT on the Northwood Platform. Hopefully, this should drive the Catalyst Crew on the OGL driver :)

LOL I did just see that. I wonder how "those people" are feeling reading OCPs 10X7, No AA 8X recommendation, and seeing those big stretches below 30fps?

COOL. :D I am glad I bought the way I did with my new build :)

I want to run at the Ultra quality level like the dream system he setup at the end!

I have 3800+
2 Gb OCZ
and soon a step up from EVGA 6800 GT to 6800 Ultra

I hope my 3800+ performs as well as the FX-53 (512k more cache)?

Of course when HL2 comes out I may be sad and want to have the Powercolor X800 XT I was trying to hold out for :p

I don't know brudda, I don't think the 2 slot cooler, 2 molex connectors, and unknown overclockability of the U is worth it or not. If your GT reaches or exceeds Ultra speeds I think I'd settle in, I plan to. Regardless, I don't think you will be getting a U anytime soon, the line you are standing in is a long one and the tickets to ride are being handed out sparingly.

Hey Punisher,

Yeah a LONG line! I haven't tested my overclocking of the processor or video card yet (I'm a first time builder and proud :D ) I will try and test at least the video card for overclocking this weekend. I am hoping that, if I waint until October steup... they may have 512 Mb cards by then?

Hoping to get 400 / 1200 maybe with the card (if I went Ultra was hoping for 450 / ???)
Hoping to get my 3800+ to 2.5 or 2.6? :)

I just hope the 6800 GT or Ultra (if I go that route) will do well in HL2!

ATi is likely to run the table with HL2 the way nV is with D3, but just as the ATi cards are doing well in D3 the same should go for nV in HL2. I hadn't consider the 512mb card senario, but given what it's likely to cost I'm betting on sticker shock when/if it shows up. You should install the coolbits reg patch and use the auto overclock feature to determine good settings for your card. That'll take your inexperience largely out of the equation and let you get some extra juice from it :)
